Popularity Of The DSLR Is On The Rise In Battle With Smartphone Photography

The DSLR is proving to still be a popular camera choice, despite almost everyone taking photos with smartphones nowadays.

No one can really argue that smartphones have turned into a piece of technology many of us now reach for when we want to capture a quick photo, with these all-in-one devices creeping up the popularity scale in the 'go to' device list for photographers. However, figures show that even though the smartphone is still reigning king for many, the DSLR is working its way back up the ranks, with more people uploading photos taken with them to photo sharing platforms.

The figures were collected by Flickr in their yearly 'top device' round-up but our own figures also support that the DSLR isn't a camera that users have forgotten about.

Smartphones accounted for half of the photos uploaded to Flickr, up from 48% in 2016, which is a huge figure but those who uploaded images captured with a DSLR to the photo-sharing platform has grown from 25% in 2016 to 33% this year. On ePHOTOzine, the majority of members shared images they captured on DSLRs, with mirrorless cameras taking the runner-up spot. Fewer people are using compact cameras (probably in favour of using smartphones instead) and Flickr's figures also saw this with uploads from point-and-shoot cameras sitting at 12%, which is down from 21% in 2016. Surprisingly, only 4% of uploads to Flickr were from Mirrorless cameras.

Back in May, we compiled a list of the most popular cameras on site and the Nikon D7100 came out on top with the Canon EOS 7D Mark II following in second place. Nikon and Canon DSLRs dominate the top ten but you can find more DSLRs, Mirrorless, Compacts, and Smartphones ePHOTOzine thinks are the best for photographers over in our 'Best Gear' section of the site.

Taking a photo with a DSLR is always going to be a superior experience to that of using a phone for photography.

Interesting to see that DSLRs usage is on the rise again, as many people start realising the actual difference in the results.

So pleased with this upturn. It is essential for continued investment by manufacturers. The minute it drops off this investment will reduce greatly!!
