Proud Camden is pleased to present The Karl Ferris Psychedelic Experience, which is on at Proud Camden from the 6 December until 3 February 2013. Entry is free, and Proud Camden is open 11am until 5pm every day.

The exhibition is a retrospective of the man responsible for the psychedelic aesthetic synonymous with the British Rock Elite of the 60s and 70s. Ferris’ experimental and flamboyant photography helped craft the public image of Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, Eric Clapton, Cream and The Hollies and this exhibition features many album covers and promo shoots of these bands alongside kaleidoscopic fashion shoots for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and The Beatles’ Apple Boutique.

After serving two years with the Royal Air Force as an aerial photographer, Ferris returned to the UK ‘Beat’ scene in the 60s and became a fashion photographer for 19 and Petticoat magazines and later for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, French Mode and Marie Claire. An early collaboration with designers Simon Posthuma and Marijke Koger – aka The Fool and The Beatles’ Apple Boutique store on Baker St. – lead to a fashion centrefold in The Sunday Times and Ferris soon became a go-to for psychedelic fashion features, magazine covers and record album covers.

Ferris’ experimented with a Nikon fisheye lens and military infrared film to create the infamous Jimi Hendrix “Are You Experienced” album cover. Hendrix said of the results: “You‘re doing with photography what I’m doing with music - going far out beyond the limits and blowing minds”. What followed were the unmistakable images of Donovan, Cream, The Holies and other 60s music giants of the era – florid, hallucinogenic and unique portraits of an evolving music scene – and three more covers for Hendrix; “Axis Bold As Love”, “Electric Ladyland” and “Smash Hits”.

Psychedelic fashion-features staring Pattie Harrison and Jenny Boyd; acid pink and neon blue photo shoots for Donovan’s album covers; and sittings with Hendrix in full 60s attire: Proud Camden invites you to The Karl Ferris Psychedelic Experience.

Proud Camden can be found at The Horse Hospital, Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8AH. For more information visit the Proud Camden website.
