RAVPower Wireless Filehub & Media Drive Handling

The RAVPower Filehub is lightweight and small enough to carry in your camera bag without it taking up too much space. On the top are four lights. The first one indicates how much power is left - green means it is full, when is starts to flash red, it is telling you the battery is running down. The next light indicates whether a connection has been made to any USB or SD cards inserted and will flash when reading and writing. The third light is blue when the Wi-Fi is on and the last light turns green when the Filehub is connected to the internet. You connect USB and SD cards on the front - you can enter one of each at the same time!

RAVPower Wireless Filehub & Media Drive Performance

Connecting your mobile / PC device to the hub is easy, just head to your Wi-Fi and select the FileHub-C24A network and enter the default password - both of these can be changed. Once you're connected you can access the settings via a URL. This includes a wizard which will take your through configuring the Filehub, including allowing it to access the internet and change the password. If you're accessing the drive on a computer, the web interface is great - it lets you add, remove, copy files etc. If you're using a mobile device, it's much easier to use the AirStor app. This will let you copy images from any attached memory cards or USB devices to your mobile device, send by email or upload to Facebook. When playing back a movie, there is occasional stuttering, so it's perhaps not the ideal way to watch films.

Generally setup was easy, but there were occasions where we had to switch off the device and start over, sometimes the Wi-Fi connection dropped during initial connection attempts and the internet connection had to be redone. We had a dialogue box in a foreign language appear at one stage. Other than that, the RAVPower Filehub is easy to use. The menu options via the web interface are plentiful and life is much easier if you can tinker with these on a laptop, rather than a small screen device.

The RAWPower Filehub has a number of advanced features such as Samba, DHCP and DDNS.

When testing the internet speed, there was no noticeable drop in upload or download speeds when using the Filehub.

Value for money

The RAVPower Wireless Filehub & Media Drive is available now from Amazon for £33.99. There are a number of products available that can extend your mobile devices memory. These include Wi-Fi hard drives, such as the Transcend StoreJet M25H3 1.5TB Hard Drive, Seagate Wireless Plus and the Transcend Wireless Drive StoreJet Cloud, which will cost you significantly more that the RAVPower. The Maxell AirStash lets you insert SD memory cards as extra memory, so it's a similar idea to the RAVPower, but costs a lot more money. You could also purchase an Eye-Fi Mobi Wi-Fi memory card, but again, these are quite expensive.

RAVPower Wireless Filehub & Media Drive Verdict

There are plenty of ways to transfer pictures from your camera to your smartphone or tablet these days. Many cameras have built-in Wi-Fi, but of course you may not want to purchase a new camera, just for its wireless capabilities. You could purchase an Eye-Fi memory card, but this just means you have one SD card that has Wi-Fi, the RAVPower Filehub lets you put any SD card in! You can even attach a USB drive or charge your phone using the USB socket. The RAVPower Filehub packs plenty of features and is excellent value for money.

The RAVPower Wireless Filehub & Media Drive is an inexpensive way to increase your mobile device memory.
