The Reallusion FaceFilter3 software is specifically designed to allow you to enhance all of your photos to a professional quality. Focusing mainly on portrait retouching, FaceFilter3 offers a wide collection of tools ranging from simple skin modification, such as skin smoothing and blemish removal, to a "comprehensive multi-layer make-up system complete with hundreds of templates for one-click application". FaceFilter3 also offers a small range of DSLR photo effects that can be used to enhance other types of photographs during the editing process. The FaceFilter3 software is available from the Reallusion website for $79.95 (Pro) or $29.99 (Standard), and a free 15 day trail can also be downloaded from the website.

Reallusion FaceFilter3 Features:

  • General image editing/enhancement – crop, rotate, flip, white balance, exposure, contrast, recover, fill light and vibrancy
  • Fitting – automatically specifies the location and dimensions of the facial features on the image; can manually adjust the points if required
  • Makeover - apply makeup for each facial feature; includes skin foundation (refinement, de-oil, eye bag reduction), facial make-up (highlight and contour, blushes, lips, teeth), and eye make-up (eyebrows, eyelashes, eye lines, eye shadows, iris, red eye reduction, contact lenses)
  • Reshape - apply facial shaping effects, and adjust muscle or expression strength; includes face features (face shape), and muscle features (eye muscles)
  • Effect - apply lens filters to the image, modify the foreground, or create layering effects for the background; includes lens filter (vignette, monochrome, colour balance, brightness/contrast, hue/saturation) and DOF effect (foreground – sharpen, brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, colour balance; background – de-focus, brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, colour balance)
  • Presets – over 400 unique beauty templates
  • View – zoom in and out and fit to window, with multi-view that can show a dual view, compare view, or after view
  • Real time performance – all changes are made as soon as settings have been edited (status indicator shows when the changes are loading)
  • Good basic interface – accessible for users using the basic settings but when more advanced settings are required, the navigation complicates; once figured out, interface becomes easily navigable and user friendly
  • RAW Compatibility – compatible to RAW file format
  • Help window
  • Undo/redo

Reallusion FaceFilter3 Performance:

After opening up the Reallusion FaceFilter3 software, you can either import one of your images that you wish to edit, or you can use one of the software’s sample images to experiment with.

Once your selected image has loaded, you can use the settings in the tool bar to change the view of the image by either zooming in or out, fitting the image to the window, and choosing the appropriate viewing mode for your photo: dual view, compare view, or after view.

You will then notice that to the right of the interface is the Image Enhancement modify panel, where you can adjust general image settings, using scrollbars and sliders, before starting the retouching process.

Image Enhancement

Once you have edited the general settings of your image, you can then work your way through the top panel of settings that include Fitting, Makeover, Reshape and Effect. By clicking on each of these sections, you are then taken to a different window that allows you to edit the image depending on the section you chose.

Fitting is primarily used for editing portraits and is the part of the software that automatically specifies the location and dimensions of the facial features whilst also allowing you to adjust the given points if required.

Once this section is complete, you can then move on to Makeover and Reshape which allows you to retouch your portrait image by applying makeup (for each facial feature) and facial shaping effects through the adjusting of muscle or expression strength based on the fitting result. You can change these settings by either experimenting with each of the setting choices, or applying one of the numerous templates that FaceFilter3 has to offer. (These can be found in the Content Manager at the bottom of the interface).

The modify panel (found to the right of the interface) in these two sections gives the user the basic editing sliders, but if the advanced settings are required, you simply need to click on the diagramed button of the aspect you wish to change, in order to bring up the advanced modification selection that you can work from.

As for Effect, this panel allows you to apply lens filters to the image, modify the foreground, or create layering effects for the background and can be used for any type of photograph, not just portraits.

Once you have completed your editing and retouching, you can then choose to export your image from the top panel of the interface. This takes you to a separate window that allows you to choose the appropriate image format and size before exporting and saving your file in the desired destination.

Reallusion FaceFilter3 Verdict:

Reallusion FaceFilter3 easily allows you to enhance all of your photos to a professional quality through the wide range of settings and presets that it has to offer. Being slightly confusing to use at the beginning, this software does have its minor problems, but these are easily resolved through research and practice. FaceFilter3 markets itself on allowing you to create realistic retouches, but this can only be achieved if used correctly and through continual practice. Focusing mainly on portrait retouches, the extra DSLR photo effects the software has to offer opens up a wider editing platform for the users, allowing them to excel in editing techniques that they may not have used before.
