The only thing you need to add is 2 AAA batteries.

TriggerScout PIR Features

SabreSwitch TriggerScout PIR Remote Trigger Review: TriggerScout PIR (3)

The TriggerScout PIR Kit is a long range infra-red heat sensing device, with a maximum range of 20 metres. It is designed to easily capture images using a Passive Infra Red sensor to detect moving heat, such as squirrels, foxes, and other wildlife.

The TriggerScout PIR sensor can be connected directly to the cameras remote trigger socket or it can be connected to the TriggerSmart MCT-1 control unit, offering the ability to tune the sensitivity of the sensors and delaying the triggering of the capture device. There is also a choice of single exposures or continuous shooting over given time spans.

The TriggerScout PIR can be used by to trigger stills or videos recording. The device lets you setup your camera without having to operate your camera yourself, which would normally scare away wildlife or other subjects. The TriggerScout PIR could be used for Wildlife, Sports, Event Photography or Security applications.

The TriggerScout PIR Kit includes: 1 x Passive Infra Red Sensor, 1 x Stakepods, 1 x Weatherproof Covers, 1 x 3 meter cable 3.5mm to 2.5mm, 1 x Jack Adapter 2.5 to 3.5mm, 1 x 6 degrees PIR Baffle. The TriggerScout PIR kit is available for £99 + VAT, or £118.80 incl VAT.

TriggerScout PIR Handling

The controls on the device couldn't be simpler, with one switch, which is used to switch the device on, when used on it's own, or can be switched to be controlled with the TriggerSmart controller. When used with the TriggerSmart controller you don't need to put any batteries in the TriggerScout, as it can then get its power from the controller unit.

Battery life is rated at 100+ hours, which should outlast most cameras, unless you are using a power adapter with your camera. The TriggerScout uses 2x AAA batteries, which are held inside the unit. To put the batteries in, you need to undo two Philips screws and open the unit.

Sabre Switch TriggerScout PIR Sample Photos

The TriggerScout PIR works very well, detecting the rapid and often quick moving squirrels. It's then down to your camera whether it can correctly and quickly focus on the subjects. We used manual focus for these photos, and placed nuts in the same position to encourage the squirrels to pause briefly when they would be correctly focused. The TriggerScout and camera took several hundred photos, and was able to quickly trigger the camera as soon as the squirrel entered the sensor's detection area. The sensor was quite easy triggered and the provided baffle can make the detection area shorter and narrower, which could help reduce wasted shots (depending on your lens, composition, and subject).

Value For Money

The TriggerScout PIR kit is available for £118 (including VAT) from RobertWhite, which makes it good value for money as a complete kit, ready to use. There are a number of other remote triggers available on the market.

TriggerScout PIR Verdict

The TriggerScout PIR kit makes it very easy to get started with remote shooting and detection of wildlife and other warm-blooded subjects. Everything you need is included in the box, apart from the AAA batteries, and the kit will work with most Canon and Nikon cameras, with optional adapter cables available if your camera doesn't have a 3.5 or 2.5mm remote socket. For those that are interested in capturing wildlife then the TriggerScout PIR is an excellent starting kit that is easy to use, and can deliver results quickly.
