Galaxy Note9

The Samsung Galaxy Note9 is the latest smartphone to join the Note Android smartphone line-up and Samsung are unveiling it to the World as we type this.

When the first Galaxy Note was introduced, people said it was too big and no one would use it but now, big phones are, pretty much, standard. In fact, bigger and better screens are the focus of the new smartphone race with designers trying to create the smallest bezels and largest screen size they can (the new Huawei Note 10 has a 7-inch screen!).

The original Note had a 5.3" screen which, at the time, seemed huge but with a 6.4" Quad HD+ Super AMOLED, 2960x1440 (516ppi) screen and end-to-end display, that just over 5" screen now seems, almost, small.

As well as a better screen, power, memory, and capacity were some of the main focus points for Samsung when creating the Galaxy Note9. In fact, Samsung says the 4000mAH battery will last all day, on one charge! Plus, fast charging is compatible with wired and wireless charging and the minimum memory built-in is 128GB. There's also a 512GB version available, which, can be expanded further with a MicroSD card (as too can the 128GB version).

Those who like their headphones to still be connected via a cable, there's a headphone socket on the bottom of the new smartphone along with a USB socket for charging/connection to a computer and the smartphone's stereo speakers.

The fingerprint sensor can now be found under the rear camera so it's easier to reach and the eye-catching S-Pen is now a remote control that can pause/start videos or be used as a remote shutter for selfies and group shots.

Talking of photos, the bit we're particularly interested in, the cameras in the Galaxy Note9 build on the camera technology found in the Galaxy S9/S9 Plus by adapting to your environment, recognising scenes and detecting problems before you've noticed them.

Just like Huawei's smartphones, the Galaxy Note9 features scene recognition so it can pick the best settings possible when capturing an image, optimising colours and dynamic range for a better photo. The camera is also intelligent and will tell you if an image is blurry, the lens is smudged or that someone has blinked so you can immediately take the shot again.

Other interesting camera features include advanced noise reduction technology and, of course, a dual aperture lens - which adjusts to light like the human eye - is built in.

The rear dual camera features dual OIS and a wide-angle (super speed dual pixel, 12MP, AF, f/1.5-f/2.4) as well as a telephoto lens (12MP, AF, f/2.4). 2x optical zoom is built in along with up to 10x digital zoom. The front-facing camera features 8MP, autofocus and an f/1.7 aperture.

Auto-HDR is built into both camera and when shooting with the rear lenses, you can capture panoramas and use LED flash.

As for video, this is recorded at 2160p at 60fps, 1080p at 240fps and 720p at 960fps with the rear camera and the front-facing camera will capture video at 1440p at 30fps.

The Samsung Galaxy Note9 is dust/water resistant (IP68 rating), runs Android 8.1 (Oreo), can be unlocked a variety of ways and it's powered by a 10nm 64-bit Octa-core processor as well as 6GB or 8GB of RAM.

As for when you can get your hands on one, the Galaxy Note9 will be available from 24 August 2018 in Midnight Black, Lavender Purple and Metallic Copper with matching S Pen (depending on location). The Ocean Blue version comes with a Yellow S Pen. Prices starts at £899 for the 128GB version and £1,099 for the 512GB version.
