The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip smartphone hasn't really been much of a secret but Samsung officially unveiled the new flip smartphone at their Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event, last night, alongside the Samsung Galaxy S20 series of smartphones.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip the perfect smartphone for photographers? Probably not as the camera specs are a bit sparse but it is a pretty cool-looking device so if you only need one rear camera and a selfie camera, you might actually like it. 

It's not the first time we've seen a foldable device from Samsung as the Galaxy Fold was introduced last year (after a few teething problems) but the Galaxy Z Flip is a little cheaper (£1300) and made differently with a 'Hideaway Hinge' and foldable glass. 

The 'Hideaway Hinge' on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip works like a laptop hinge and can stay open at various angles while the Infinity Flex Display features Samsung's bendable Ultra-Thin Glass with an in-display cutout for the 10MP f/2.4 selfie camera. 

When folded, the Galaxy Z Flip is wallet-sized so it fits easily in the palm of your hand and when open, the FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED display measures 6.7-inch. It also automatically splits into two 4-inch screens so you can view images, content or videos on the top half of the display, and control them on the bottom half.

On the rear is a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera with dual pixel autofocus, optical image stabilisation, and up to 8x digital zoom. 4K video capture is built-in along with Night Hyperlapse and Night mode for stills, Live Focus and Super Steady recording. When the smartphone is closed, you can use the rear camera to capture selfies, too. 

Other features include a 3300mAh battery, wireless charging, 8GB RAM/256GB internal storage and a fingerprint sensor. 

Availability

The Galaxy Z Flip will be available in limited quantities in Mirror Purple and Mirror Black, from 14 February 2020 for £1300.

UPDATE: Samsung has unveiled a 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip smartphone. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G will be available in the UK in Mystic Grey and Mystic Bronze starting August 7, 2020.
