Samsung PRO+ Plus SDXC Memory Card Review: 64GB PRO+ SDXC UHS-I Card

Samsung memory cards stand out from the crowd with its tough memory cards, meaning the cards are temperature proof, waterproof, shock proof, x-ray proof and magnet proof. Samsung has now introduced a new range of EVO+ and PRO+ SDXC memory cards, bringing faster speeds for 4K video and full HD equipped devices. These cards are also available as microSD cards.

The SDXC card comes with a 10 year warranty and the latest models are UHS:I U:3 / Class 10 cards so should be extremely quick. Samsung say the PRO+ card is ideal for high resolution photos and 4K UHD video. With this in mind, let's see how this card performs in our tests.

Samsung PRO+ Memory Card Performance

To test the read and write times of these cards, we used a Transcend USB 3.0 card reader and CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 x64. For digital cameras, the write time is the most important aspect as this determines how quickly you can write photos from the camera to the card. The read time is important when you want to copy the photos from the card onto your PC or view them in playback mode on the camera.

  Read MB/s Write MB/s
Samsung PRO+ 64GB SDXC UHS I U:3 Class 10 91.40 81.51
Sandisk Extreme Pro 8GB SDHC UHS I U:1 Class 10 51.08 42.58
Panasonic 16GB SDHC UHS I U:3 Class 10 48.78 18.48
Prospec PRO 16GB 606x SDHC UHS I U:1  25.77 14.11

While read and write speeds from the Samsung PRO+ card are not as quick as specified on the box, the card does deliver extremely high read and write speeds, and quicker performance than the Sandisk Extreme Pro card. The Samsung card is also quicker than a number of other high-speed cards.

Value For Money

The Samsung PRO+ 64GB SDXC card is available for £58, compared to around £40 for a 64GB Sandisk Extreme Pro card. This makes the Samsung card more expensive, however the card does offer tough features, with the Samsung giving a 10-year warranty for peace of mind.

Samsung PRO+ Memory Card Verdict

The Samsung PRO+ SDXC memory card offers some of the fastest read and write speeds available as well as offering a 10-year warranty that is also backed up by the card being waterproof, temperature proof, shockproof, x-ray proof and magnet proof making it much more likely to survive when compared to more fragile cards. We would, therefore, be happy to recommend Samsung PRO+ SDXC memory cards.

What does the warranty consist of? I always used to buy SanDisk Pro Compact Flash cards until a good few years ago when one which cost me the thick end of £150 failed at the first attempt [I'd shot around 30 frames at a wedding before it stuttered and locked and lost] only to find their 'professional warranty' consisted of replacing the card. I wasn't best pleased even though [by incredible good fortune] the shots were informal ones; after the ceremony and staged shots.

The camera I was using was not dual-slot mirrored, so there was really little I could have reasonably done to cover myself against this. Their argument was that they could not warrant electronic storage - mine was that CF cards are more analogous to film stock - and if you've got faulty stock or the processing has been mucked up at a professional level, you're indemnified against loss.

I've never bought SanDisk since - getting a replacement card is little consolation if you've lost valuable work.
