The Seagate GoFlex Satellite is a portable hard drive which can be used with iOS and Andrioid devices. We have previously reviewed the Kingston 16Gb Wi-Drive
, which is small enough to carry around, but has limited capacity. The GoFlex Satellite has 500Gb's worth of space, but is bigger and heavier and is available from £136.00.

Seagate GoFlex Satellite Wireless Mobile Storage Handling
The GoFlex Satellite can be charged via a wall plug, computer or in car. To add media, you connect the device via USB (2.0 or 3.0) to your computer, as you would any ordinary external hard drive. When you have finished adding your content, you need to disconnect it from your computer and switch it on. When the device is ready (takes up to a minute), the wireless light will flash blue. The other light indicates how much charge the device has, with green for fully charged, red when it needs charging and amber when it is charging.
On your device, either iOS or Android, you need to install the GoFlex Media app, available from the iTunes Store or Andriod Market. The next step is to connect to the GoFlex Satellite. This will mean that you aren't connected to the internet any more, but you can reconnect later via the hard drive. You can also set a password so that no one can access the device without your permission.
During initial testing, we ran into a number of problems when viewing the content on the device. There has been a firmware update from Seagate (version 1.3.5.015) which sorted out all of these problems, and added further functionality to the GoFlex Satellite.
Your content is organised into videos, photos, music and documents, but you also access by folder view. Content can also be added to the GoFlex Satellite with the Seagate Media Sync software which automatically update from selected folders when the device is connected to your computer.
Seagate GoFlex Satellite Wireless Mobile Storage Performance
If you have a lot of media in one folder, in can be quite slow to access it, but generally, once you are listening to a song, playing a movie or flicking through a photo album, it tends to be a good experience. Within the app, you can't move images onto your iOS device to edit them in other apps (you can download them to the Local Content folder but they still aren't available to edit via apps), which is fairly frustrating, but if you go to your web browser, go to goflexsatellite.com and navigate to your image, you can save it to your camera roll from there. This does mean you can only do one at a time.
The Seagate Media Sync software makes it very easy to sync chosen folders with the GoFlex satellite, you can set it to auto sync, as well as only sync items that are compatible with your device. You can choose a selection of videos to watch, music to listen to and pictures to view in a slide show, adding transition, time, loop and shuffle effects.
We found that the Kingston Wi-Drive got very hot during use, but the GoFlex Satellite doesn't get any where near as hot, but it is still quite warm after an extended period of use.
Value for money
The Seagate GoFlex Satellite is available from £136.00. The Hitachi G-Connect is also 500Gb but costs around £189.00. A smaller solution is the Kingston Wi-Drive
, which comes in capacities of 16Gb, 32Gb and 64Gb priced at £49.00, £68.93 and £82.38 respectively.
Seagate GoFlex Satellite Wireless Mobile Storage Verdict
The Seagate GoFlex Satellite is an extremely useful device if you are looking for a portable hard-drive which can connect to your computer and mobile devices, such as tablets and smart phones. As we found with the Kingston Wi-Drive, it's not ideal for adding images to edit on your tablet device, but is great for viewing albums, as well as listening to music and watching films when travelling.
