The Christmas Fair will take place at Knebworth House, ancestral home of the Lytton family and one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the British Isles.
Edward Bulwer -Lytton (1803 - 1873) is remembered for his interest in occult studies as well as his numerous political achievements. He was a leading member of the Rosicrucian Society in England and this influenced his writings. Amongst the better known of these works are the novel Zanoni and the chilling short story The Haunters and the Haunted or The House and the Brain.
Knebworth has its own ghostly inhabitants, the most famous of these being the sad spirit of Spinning Jenny who was imprisoned during the 19th century in the east wing of the mansion for committing some dreadful crime, with only her spinning wheel for company. She eventually went mad and died, but the eerie sound of her creaking spinning wheel can still be heard in the dead of night.
