Situations when Bokeh Blur Will Aid Your Images: SMC DA 50mm f/1.8

Bokeh blur is an attractive addition to images that are taken with a shallow depth of field. With a wide aperture of f/1.8, Pentax's DA 50mm lens is ideal for capturing bokeh blur when compared to a standard kit lens.

Here, we run down some situations when this lens will be useful for improving background and foreground blurring:

Landscapes - The Pentax-DA 50mm f/1.8 will create a softer blurring effect when compared to the standard kit lens, making it great for use in landscapes where there is blurred foreground interest. For example, the branches of an overhanging tree in an image could add to the composition, but only if they are blurred so as not to take attention away from the main focal point, which will be the landscape in the distance.

Portraits - Portraits often require a blurred background to allow the subject to stand out more, and this is where the Pentax DA 50mm f/1.8 can help. It is able to create a stark contrast between the sharpness of your subject and the softly blurred background, keeping the viewer's attention firmly on the model.

Flowers - By narrowing down the range of what is in focus, the Pentax DA 50mm f/1.8 can make your subject stand out whilst also depicting the surroundings, ideal for when you want to isolate one flower from a group but still want to make it clear that there are other flowers surrounding it. Take your time composing the image so that you choose a flower that allows you to make use of both foreground and background bokeh.

Animals - The Pentax DA 50mm f/1.8 is ideal for photography of moving animals. The ability to blur out sometimes difficult to control, busy backgrounds allows you to concentrate solely on the animal at hand, to create some lovely images. The bright maximum aperture of the lens enables you to shoot at a fast enough shutter speed so as not to need an excessively high sensitivity setting.
