Specification
The Slik Lite AL-420S is a compact travel tripod that incorporates an integrated, removable LED torch in the centre column. Weighing only 776g, and a folded length of 31.2cm, it sounds like the ideal option for those that need a tripod but want to pack light. Here, we take a look at how it performs.
Slik Lite AL-420S Features
The Lite AL-420S is part of a family of 3 tripods, and is the smallest in the family, with the AL-420M and AL-420 that are capable of being taller but are also heavier.
The AL-420S has a max height of 39.9 inches. At less than a kilogram, this should make it ideal for taking with you on a trip out. There is a max loading capacity of 2kg, so it's primarily designed for mirrorless cameras and smaller DSLRs with standard lenses.
There are 4 leg sections, which are extended by undoing lock levers. There are 3 different leg angles available. The legs have something called 'Rapid Flip Mechanism'. The blue lever can be flicked down on each leg and this allows you to pull the legs around 180 degrees, enabling more compact storage. On the end of each leg are smooth rubber feet.
The centre column can be unscrewed and flipped around; it's also height adjustable. A ball head with quick release plate is included. The LED torch can be found at the bottom of the centre column. It's operated by turning it until it lights up. It's powered by 2xAAA batteries which are included. The torch part of the column can be removed if you wish and a screw on cap to keep the torchless column is included.
In the box you also get a really nice velvet effect drawstring bag, adding a little luxury.

Slik Lite AL-420S Handling
The tripod feels sturdy and well built, with nicely damped legs. Leg sections slide out smoothly and the leg locks are designed to be opened all at once with one hand, allowing you to set the tripod up quickly and easily.
It's easy to flick the Rapid Flip Mechanism switch even with gloves on and there is a reassuring click when the tripod reaches one of the leg angles. Tightening and loosening the knobs is easy and they are ergonomic without being too large.
The ball head has been cleverly designed so that even at maximum looseness, there is still some friction there, minimising the chances of accidentally tipping the camera too far when adjusting the angle.
Slik Lite AL-420S Performance
The tripod stands very rigidly, even at max height, and the rubber feet do a good job of gripping on a wide variety of terrain. The leg angles enable you to shoot very low to the ground, and the added versatility of the reversible centre column enable you to set up even the closest of macro shots.
The LED torch is handy, a simple twist turns it on and it helps you to see your kit when set up. It can also act as a visual aid when searching for things etc too as it is very bright. Slik recommends that you don't point it directly into your eyes.
The tripod is very quick to set up and pack away. It's quite amazing how small it can compact down to. It's not the tallest of tripods, with the max height reaching about hip level on a 6 ft tall person, but it will be ideal for pursuits where height isn't the be-all and end-all.
Value For Money
The Slik Lite AL-420S is available for £121 through Intro2020 in the UK. For the build quality and additional features that you get, this is really not bad value at all. The addition of an LED torch is a novelty yet useful feature.
An alternative might be the Cullmann Neomax 240, which has a maximum height of 112cm but lacks an LED light and has twist grips instead of levers. It's available for £70.
Slik Lite AL-420S Verdict
Overall, the Slik Lite AL-240S tripod will be an ideal companion for those that require a fuss - free tripod and want to travel light. It folds up so compactly that it will easily fit into a hiking rucksack easily, and it weighs less than a kilogramme. The LED light is an added bonus for those that will be shooting at night.
It's a well-made tripod that has a premium look and finish for a small price. It'll make an ideal stocking filler for someone that is in need of a good quality tripod who's concerned about weight.
