Quick Verdict

SmartSHOW 3D slideshow software has seen a few improvements since the last time we put the software to the test. Having the option to undo and redo steps in the main window is really helpful and there are plenty of new effects to play around with.

You can work independently or use the built-in wizard to create your slideshow which makes SmartSHOW 3D really easy to use and it also means you can have a slideshow of your best images in not much time at all. Plus, price-wise, it is still on par with other slideshow creating software.

Overall, if you enjoy making slideshows to share with people, there's no reason why you won't enjoy using SmartSHOW 3D.

AMS Software SmartSHOW 3D has had an update which brings new tools, improved features and royalty-free soundtracks to version 12.0 of this popular photo slideshow software (some also know it as video slideshow software but you can work with both video/photos).

To see how well the latest version performs, we're putting the new features that are built into the professional slideshow software to the test. It's also worth having a look at our last review of the slideshow program so you can compare the new/old versions and get a little bit more information on how the software works.

There are two versions of the SmartSHOW 3D photo slideshow software available: Standard and Deluxe with the Standard version currently being priced at $39.90 (around £32) while the Deluxe version is priced at $59.60 (around £47). On test, we have the full version which means we can add video clips to slideshows and burn them to DVD.

AMS Software SmartSHOW 3D Ease Of Use & Performance

Slide |

When you first download and open SmartSHOW 3D 3 options are available to you: New Project, Slideshow in 5 Minutes and Open Project. The first time you use it you'll be clicking on one of the first two options as you won't have created a project previously. You also may notice that the software isn't the most modern-looking but don't let this put you off using it as looks aren't everything.

'Slideshow in 5 Minutes' is still a great time saver and it's also an excellent option for those who haven't created slideshows before as most of the work is done for you by the photo slideshow software. All you have to do is select a slideshow theme, add all the photos you want to use, add music (if you want to) and then, the slideshow software builds the slideshow for you. Once created, you can preview the slideshow, save/export it or continue editing it.

If you choose 'New Project' the slideshow creation process is completely in your hands but after playing around with the slideshow program, you'll soon get to grips with it. In fact, if you don't want to add too many effects, or go for the '5-minute' option, you can create a slideshow in a matter of minutes.

We did have a play around with making a slideshow manually but in all honesty, we really liked the auto options given to us under the  'Slideshow in 5 Minutes' option as it was quick and the slideshow software did a brilliant job at picking effects, transitions and how/when to move onto the next image.

It does take a while for the video slideshow software to compile all of your images into a finished slideshow but with everything that gets added, it's easy to see why. You can also add music if you want to which is royalty-free so you won't get any complaints from social media channels about using copyrighted music.

There are plenty of new templates to pick from so there's certainly something for everyone with 'Dark Appeal' being one of our favourites.

You can edit individual slides, adding/removing layers, creating animations, adding sounds, overlaying text, playing around with special effects and much more. In fact, there's so much to edit and control, you can spend a long time perfecting each individual slide and really focusing on tiny details that make the final product right.

If you find you do need a little bit of help, as slideshow editing can seem a little complicated when you're first playing around with your photos, there is a video tutorial built-in but most actions are straightforward enough with either you clicking the mouse or 'click, dragging and dropping' actions.

Towards the bottom of the screen is the timeline where you can add frames, transitions and music to build your slideshow creation. To the left is where you access files you want to use in your slideshow, add collages to frames, add subtitles and title clips. You can also see what animations are available to give your slides movement, various transitions so you can alter how the slideshow moves from slide-to-slide and an option to add music from 200+ soundtracks. Last time we reviewed the slideshow software, you couldn't add full music tracks, only sound effects, so this is an improvement. Music tracks also snap to fit your slideshow so you don't have to mess around cutting the music to fit and finish in the right place.

Transitions and Animations can be previewed before you add them to your timeline and there certainly are plenty to choose from. You can use quite elaborate transitions/animations if you want to (think snow falling from the sky) but a simple zoom or pan is often the most effective. You can also access 3D options and if you do require more templates and effects, you can download them for an additional fee.

The introduction of an undo/redo button is a brilliant move as you're obviously going to make a mistake at some point and having the option to undo an action in the main window just means you can remove something and carry on editing - speeding workflow up as a result. Having access to fade-in & fade-out effects on individual slide layers is also cool as you can now fade multiple layers on one slide, giving you the opportunity to get even more creative. Other more advanced tools such as the crop video tool and mask layers are also great to see and are something that those who regularly edit photos will be happy to see.

Music |

To add movement into your slideshows, you can mix video with stills, overling video clips onto photos so you have multiple layers on one slide and you can also add voice clips. The voice clips appear on a different audio track to music so you can have both running at the same time and edit them individually, too.

When you've finished your edits, you can create a slideshow video to be played on a computer, tablet or smartphone, burn it to DVD or export it ready for various social media and video sharing websites (in various formats/quality options).

Overall, SmartSHOW 3D is very user-friendly, easy to use video slideshow software that has a simple UI, an abundance of templates/effects and it's really quick to make an impressive looking slideshow in not much time at all.

Value For Money

There are two versions of the SmartSHOW 3D photo slideshow software available: Standard and Deluxe with the Standard version currently being priced at $39.90 (around £32) while the Deluxe version is priced at $59.60 (around £47). Both are very reasonably priced, considering what you get and are about on par with other slideshow software.

Alternatives to SmartSHOW 3D slideshow software include MAGIX Photostory which starts at £59 and there are also plenty of other slideshow software versions out there, some of which are free to use, but not all are as user-friendly or offer as many tools.

AMS Software SmartSHOW 3D Verdict

SmartSHOW 3D slideshow software has seen a few improvements since the last time we put the software to the test. Having the option to undo and redo steps in the main window is really helpful and there are plenty of new effects to play around with. Plus, price-wise, it is still on par with other slideshow creating software. If you need to edit your images before adding them to a slide show, AMS also make a software called PhotoWorks which we've also reviewed.

You can work independently or use the built-in wizard to create your slideshow which makes SmartSHOW 3D really easy to use and it also means you can have a slideshow of your best images in not much time at all. If you do go for the manual option, you can make a very unique slideshow with the help tools such as layers, masks and more transitions than you can probably think of. Some of the effects won't be to everyone's liking but there are so many options available that we're sure you'll find something you do like.

Overall, if you enjoy making slideshows to share with people, there's no reason why you won't enjoy using SmartSHOW 3D.
