Sony Cyber Shot RX100 VI (3)

Value For Money

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI is available for £1150 which makes it an expensive option, with the competition offering similar features for significantly less money.

Panasonic Lumix TZ200, 15x optical zoom lens, 10fps, 4K video, £729
Panasonic Lumix TZ100, 10x optical zoom lens, 10fps, 4K video, £495
Leica C-Lux (based on the TZ200), 15x optical zoom lens, 10fps, 4K video, £875

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI Verdict

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 cameras have always been compact, and the small controls have been something you can get used to on a camera with a small zoom, but as the zoom has increased to 8.3x, it becomes much more noticeable how small the camera is, and how little grip is provided, as you'll want to hold the camera as steady as possible when using the zoom. Sony sells an optional grip for £12, but it would be nice (some would consider it essential) for Sony to include it for free.

The previous model, the RX100 V, is now available for £799 (RRP £999) but features a 2.9x optical zoom lens. The biggest hurdle to buying the RX100 VI is likely to be the price, and if the price comes down over time, then it's appeal will no doubt grow.

Alternatives offer more zoom, with 10 or 15x optical zoom available, however, the alternatives don't offer as quick continuous shooting, feature a smaller EVF, and don't offer the same image quality as the RX100 VI.

The RX100 VI is an expensive camera, but for the size, it is, without doubt, one of the most capable cameras available. Delivering high-speed shooting, a high-quality zoom lens, and excellent image quality. There's a high-quality electronic viewfinder, with a high resolution and a clever pop-up mechanism.

If you have the money and are looking for a compact travel zoom, with an emphasis on image quality, then the RX100 VI delivers, but just make sure you're aware of its small size, and buy a spare battery.

There's no way I would part with that kind of money for a camera like that.

Are you seeing reflections from the water onto the boats hull? Otherwise I couldn't spot what you were seeing.

Looks just what I have been after. Unfortunately so far I have been unable to find reference to external flash control. I do hope this is available as it is a complete game breaker for me.

If I tell you that civil service hotel inspectors in an Asia country are issued with these you may feel envy Smile
They come with a posh leather case too and the civil servants can take them home too or abroad as well.
That is progress, yes they have pretty amazing fast trains there too.
