Sony digital SLRs will be named 'Alpha'
Press Release:
Sony has established a new brand name for its digital single lens reflex (D- SLR) cameras that will be launched worldwide this summer.

Meaning beginning and essential, the symbol a (pronounced alpha) embodies the spirit of Sonys approach to the digital SLR market. Under this sub-brand, Sony will produce a complete camera system of accessories and lenses to enhance the enjoyment of photography.

The Sony α mount system of cameras, lenses and accessories will integrate advanced electromechanical technologies that are key to digital SLR performance, the versatility of the well-established Dynax lens mount system, and Sonys renown in imaging devices and technologies. These include CCD and CMOS imaging sensors, as well as other image processing technologies, in addition to overall product miniaturization. People who have already made investments in many of Konica-Minoltas lenses and accessories will be able to take full advantage of Sonys new D- SLR cameras.

We are expanding our product portfolio to build upon our leadership position in the digital imaging business, said James Neal, director of marketing for digital imaging products at Sony Electronics. Our approach to D- SLR camera design and engineering will allow us to offer a new high-performance system for todays digital camera users, as well as welcome the millions of Konica-Minolta owners who have Dynax interchangeable lenses that are currently in the market.

On their new website for the Alpha brand, http://www.sony.net/Products/dslr/top.html, Sony state that they will be launched globally this summer and that the camera already designed.

Bob, I disagree with your comments. The Alpha series of cameras will feature world wide. There won't be Dynax, Alph and Maxxum varieties. Just Alpha. So how would a foreigner kn ow how to pronounce it?

Anyway, it looks promising, Sony seem to be marketing it well before they have even sold it. Something KM was not so good at.

Hopefully in summer 06 we KM users will have a camera to truly take the fight to Canon.
Somewhere the Sony's shining!

It's easy, I'll think of Alfa Romeo Smile

This sounds like positive news to me.

Whilst KM lenses will be compatible (and there will no doubt be a new range of lenses available too), I wonder what compatability there will be with other KM accessories (e.g.flash, etc). There is already considerable evidence of the second hand market "overheating" with used kit on Ebay reaching almost the same level as the old retail prices.

No doubt all will be revealed in the summer!
Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. It is quite well known to the Western (i.e. not Japanese) World.

Anyone with knowledge of the software development process will be nervous - alpha software is the first write, which once debugged a bit more is released as Beta for wider testing by the end user. Are Sony trying to tell us something?

I think I'll wait for the Omega range.......

Alpha is pretty well know and recognised both as a word and as a symbol. It's hardly original though - as far as I know, the Dynax range of cameras was originally marketed as Alpha in Japan by Minolta! I wonder if Sony will be more imaginative with their camera design than they were with their branding...

This is great news for us Minolta users, especially after 40 years.....LOL. Hopefully common sense will prevail and halt the stupid price escalations on existing equipment. I think I will wait a little longer!

Shed, My point exactly, you should not need to explain something like that to anybody, a name should be universally recognised without explanation.

BOB
Hmm,. good new for KM users.

Good point by PeterBee about the compatability of other existing KM accessories. Hopefully the will honour us that.

I think the new name is more likely to be pronounced properly by more people worldwide, since how many of us actually used to say "Mee-now-tah" ?
Good news that they are keeping minolta mount etc but we knew that already. Have read the sony site stuff and it is just marketing twaddle at the moment .... "every aspect of "the symbol formerly known as dynax" has been designed to inspire those who love photography and seek to express themselves through imaging" - thats marketing speak for "its a camera". Tells us nothing yet - i will be happy (or sad and jump ship) when I see some camera specs announced.
I'm just happy being an Olympus user after being let down by both Sony and Minolta cameras in the not to distant past.... needless to say I wont be investing in any of this false hype
