Value For Money

The Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens is priced at £949 (inc VAT), which makes it one of the more expensive 20mm lenses available for Sony FE-mount. Looking at the alternatives, there is the compact Tamron 20mm f/2.8 (£389), the larger and heavier Sigma 20mm f/1.4 Art (£650), and the Tokina Firin 20mm f/2 FE AF (£730), all offering auto-focus. If you don't need autofocus, then the Samyang 20mm f/1.8 MF (£350) is the most affordable option.

Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Verdict

The Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens is a very well-made weather-sealed lens, that gives impressive levels of sharpness, and a rather good close focusing distance. The lens is also to be commended for its relatively compact size and weight, being a good combination for the Sony Alpha A7 series. The lens does have quite strong vignetting when shooting wide-open (depending on subject), however, this could be resolved by stopping down, or by correcting it in software. For videographers, the de-click switch will be of particular interest. That just leaves the price, at £949 it's more expensive than the competition. If you value impressive levels of sharpness, and want to stick to the Sony brand, then this lens could easily be seen as worth the money.
