Sony has announced the new Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 G Master wide-angle lens, and we’ve been shooting with this premium lens. The addition of this lens means that Sony now has 30 native full-frame lenses for the E-mount. The lens is priced at €1600 (Euro) and will be available in mid-October.

The lens is more compact and lightweight than other 24mm f/1.4 lenses from Canon (650g), Nikon (620g) and Sigma (665g), and weighs 445g. The lens is designed to give high-resolution even at f/1.4, as well as “beautiful” bokeh. Sony develops all of their lenses in-house, and thanks to a mirrorless camera mount, with a shorter flange distance (than DSLR), it has allowed Sony to develop a smaller wide-angle lens.

There is a new high-power Direct Drive Super Sonic Motor (DDSSM) designed specifically for this lens, and it’s designed for both stills and movies, with fast, precise and quiet auto-focus (AF). Sony says the new focus unit delivers 3x more thrust than previous models. It features internal focusing, and focus breathing is said to be minimised.

The lens features a side AF/MF switch, a customisable focus hold button, the aperture ring (with A setting) with settings from f/1.4 to f/16, and a front focus ring.

Thee lens is made up of 13 elements, in 10 groups. There are 2 XA elements – Extreme Aspherical elements - which are manufactured with precision down to 0.01microns. There are 3 ED glass elements. The lens has been designed to suppress sagittal flare, which will please anyone intending on shooting astrophotography.

The closest focus distance is 24cm, giving 0.17x magnification. The aperture is circular, with 11 aperture blades. There’s an aperture de-click switch on the side, so you can switch the aperture click on or off. The front has a fluorine coating, and the lens is dust and moisture resistant. There’s also a Nano AR coating to suppress flare and ghosting.

The lens is supplied with lens hood, which is felt lined.
