Sony FE 70 200mm F2 8 GM Lens (2)

The new Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens for Sony E-Mount cameras, covers a full-frame sensor, and is compatible with the new 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. The new lens and two teleconverters are all due to be released in May 2016.

The Sony G Master lens range is Sony's flagship range of lenses, designed to give high resolution and beautiful bokeh, sitting at the top of the range. Resolution of these lenses is measured at 50 line pairs / mm (lp/mm) wide-open and designed for future cameras with a higher resolution than currently available. Standard MTF charts traditionally measure 10 and 30 lp/mm, and the lenses are designed to give excellent resolution into the corners of the frame.

Sony in-house lens manufacturing technology - "Tomorrow's lenses, Today from Sony"

Designed to work with both photography and video, Sony has future sensor technology in mind, particularly as development by Sony's sensor division will see higher resolution stills cameras, and 8K video cameras. Every product is quality controlled and fine tuned before shipping and consists of the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS plus the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM, and Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM.

Lenses that use aspherical lens elements, are traditionally made with a glass molding process that leaves "onion" rings visible in bokeh in photographs, however, Sony has developed a new XA (extreme aspherical) glass molding process with a much finer process (0.01 micron surface precision). This is a World's first and only Sony has this technology that gives a smoother finish to aspherical elements and therefore eliminates the "onion" ring effect.

This should be a ground breaking lens, at a price.
Rumour has it priced at 10 thousand euros. about 7,000.
The two converters would be reasonable priced at 1,000, and according to Sony do not degrade the image quality. Unusual with the 2X.
My 300MM F2.8G MK2 cost me nearly 5,000. I also own a 70-200 and a Minolta 400mm F4.5 prime So the price rumours could be right if it replaced three lenses.
2X converter added would make it a F5.6 at 400MM. Another plus for the SEL 70-200 F2.8 GM is it's video suitability. And video lenses are very expensive.
Time will tell, I believe my A7R MK2 is unbeatable except for maybe sports and wild life taken some distance from the subject.
Could this lens change that?

I would be very surprised, when it's released in May 2016, if the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is priced much higher than the Canon or Nikon equivalent - best prices currently being 1479.00 and 1499.00 respectively, although there would probably be a first adopter premium of, say, 10% before prices level out in line with the competition. The Canon and Nikon tele-converter equivalents are currently priced at around 300.

$3,500 About 3,000, Now do I sell my 70-200G F4 and my 400mm prime?.
I will have to think about it, This lens technology is the future today. The converters make this equivalent to 3 lenses.
Coinciding with the kingfishers breeding, and the fact I have started to make a kingfisher film, in 4K this is a video lens to die for.
