Sony FE 85mm F1 8 (1)

The full-frame Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 E-mount lens is designed to be an affordable bright aperture prime lens, ideal for portraits, with ED (Extra-low Dispertion) glass to reduce chromatic aberration.

There are 9 circular aperture blades, and a double linear motor for fast and quiet focus. There's a customisable focus hold button, and focus switch on the side. The lens is made up of 9 elements in 8 group. Focus was quick, although the closest focus distance of 80cm means the lens isn't ideal for very close work.

The lens exterior is made out of aluminium, and there is also sealing on all buttons and rings to give dust and moisture resistance. These photos were taken with a Sony Alpha A7R Mark II.

The blurb above says, "designed to be an affordable bright aperture prime lens, ideal for portraits". I'm guessing this means the quality of this lens will be commensurate with the price tag and the implication is that you shall get more if you pay more, such as for the Zeiss Batis 85mm or the Sony 85 F1.4 G Master lens. I am in the market for a good 85. I'm sufficiently impressed with the sample images to consider that this lens might just be for me with the advertised starting price at 599. Said to be available in the UK by mid- March 2017.

I agree. I've held off getting an 85mm as I've always had Tamron's 90mm (I was Canon) and although it works brilliantly on manual focus with the Sigma converter on the Sony, I'm in need of extra DoF and auto-focus would be a boon for those 'quicker' jobs (children as opposed to adults). Looking forward to the full review.
