HDR-AS50 Action Cam

The new Sony HDR-AS50 Action Cam was introduced at CES 2016, and is an updated FullHD action camera that comes with a waterproof case that makes the camera waterproof down to 60 metres. The HDR-AS50 features an 11.1 megapixel sensor, which can be used for stills photography, as well as 4K timelapse video creation. The camera has an updated interface, with updated buttons and an updated menus system designed to make the camera easier to use.

The bottom of the camera is now flat so that it can stand up on it's own, whereas the previous version was curved, and there is now a standard tripod socket on the bottom. The HDR-AS50 uses the Sony NP-BX1 battery, that is shared with a number of Sony Cyber-shot cameras, which should make finding a spare easy.

Sony HDR-AS50 Key Features

  • 11.1 megapixel 1/2.3inch BSI CMOS sensor
  • Wide-angle f/2.8 Zeiss Tessar lens
  • Image stabilisation
  • 8fps burst shooting mode (1s)

  • Built in stereo microphone
  • Adjustable FOV (narrow or wide) and zoom

An optional remote screen can be purchased to let you remotely control the camera as well as view what the camera is seeing, or alternatively you can use the Sony PlayMemories Mobile app to control the camera with your smartphone. The included waterproof case not only makes the camera waterproof down to 60 metres, but also makes it dustproof, shockproof (1.5m), and freezeproof letting you use the camera down to -10C.
