Sony has announced the new Sony NEX-5R, an update to the Sony NEX-5N, with Wi-Fi and new PlayMemories applications available for download. The Sony NEX-5R will be available from mid October for £670 with kit lens and is the 3rd generation of the NEX-5, the most popular model in the NEX range.

The camera promises improved handing with an improved hand grip, re-designed buttons, as well as the addition of Fn/Function button next to the shutter release button, and a new dial on the top. The top dial and rear scroll wheel can be used in full manual mode to set the shutter and aperture. The menu systems have been updated, with better touch screen control including touch-shutter which can be used to take photos. The camera features a metal body that will be available in black or white.

The top accessory port allows the connection of the included pop-up flash, as well as the optional OVF (Optical viewfinder), EVF (Electronic viewfinder) and microphone.

PlayMemories camera apps let you download apps from Sony's PlayMemories store, some free, some will be chargeable. Initially apps will only be developed by Sony, however Sony has not ruled out allowing 3rd party apps. Some of the initial apps available:

  • Bracket Pro
  • Multi-frame NR
  • Remote Control / Mobile App
  • Direct upload to Facebook / PlayMemories
  • Timelapse
  • Cinematic Photo (portion of the photo is animated)
