As we're only human, mistakes happen and this includes accidentally deleting images we actually wanted to keep and that's why there's a growing market for data recovery software. One such piece of software is Stellar Photo Recovery, which is now on version 10.0, which can recover deleted photos, videos and audio files from your computer. It's also not that expensive and with the ability to restore precious memories in not too much time at all, Stellar Photo Recovery could be a worthwhile investment... shall we find out?

Stellar Photo Recovery Features

Stellar Photo Recovery software recovers photos, videos and audio files which have been lost due to various reasons including deletion, corruption, formatting, a virus and inaccessible drives. It also supports 4k, 6k, 8k, UHD and/or 360-degree files, CFast, CompactFlash, microSDHC/XC cards and can recover data from the latest DSLRs, Mirrorless Cameras and video cameras (when a memory card is inserted and you connect it to a computer via USB). Basically, chances are, Stellar Photo Recovery will be able to search for the file you've lost on a wide variety of devices as the list of compatible file formats and cameras/storage devices that are compatible is pretty epic.

What Can Be Recovered:

  • JPEG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, PNG, PSD, Adobe EPS etc.
  • Camera RAW Files: CR2, ERF, RAF, K25, NEF, ORF, SR2, etc.
  • Video Files: MOV, MXF, AVI, ASF, WMV, MP4, 3GP, etc.
  • Graphics, logos, drawings and illustrations
  • Other file formats (add yourself)

Devices Data Can Be Recovered From:

  • Cameras - DSLR and Mirrorless
  • Drones
  • GoPro and other action cameras
  • VR Cameras
  • Encrypted Drives
  • PC/laptop
  • Hard Drive
  • USB
  • Memory Card
  • Other Storage Devices

There are only 3 steps involved in the recovery process: select location, preview and recover (we'll look at these in more detail shortly) and if you want to 'try before you buy', there's a free trial available.

As the software is rather self-explanatory, there's not much else to discuss in terms of features apart from the consumer version of Stellar Photo Recovery is available in Standard, Professional and Premium (for both Windows and Mac). To have access to every feature, you'll need the Premium version but for those who don't dabble in creating videos might find the Professional version offers enough for them. The Standard version offers basic photo, and other file, recovery but it can't do clever things like repairing corrupt photos. For more information on what each version of the software offers, have a look at the Stellar website.

Stellar Photo Recovery Performance

Stellar Photo Recovery

Once you have Stellar Photo Recovery installed, it's really simple to use so if you're not very techy, you'll still be able to recover files with ease. The User Interface is also clean and simple meaning there's nothing to confuse you, and nothing is overly complicated.

When you open the software, the first screen shows you what hard drives and other storage devices are available to scan. All you have to do is select the memory card, hard drive, camera, USB etc. you want to scan and leave the software to it. If the software doesn't find anything to recover on the original scan, it will perform a deep scan to look further (this is the case for formatted memory cards).

After the scan is complete, the software will tell you what photos, videos and audio files it has found. To recover them all, simply press the 'Recover' button or you can play around with the advanced restore settings to tell the software to only recover select files and to zip the restored files. Recovered files go into a folder location of your choice.

Stellar Photo Recovery

Overall, Stellar Photo Recovery restored deleted files with ease and it also successfully recovered all data from a formatted memory card. Once recovered, files have different names which is a bit annoying but you can easily work through the files and rename them.

The scan and recovery process isn't quick but successfully getting your photos back is more important than speed and, hopefully, it won't be a task you perform regularly anyway. Time-wise, a deep scan took around 15 minutes and the software found 539 files, in 9 folders which contained 4.08GB of data that was recoverable. A further 12 minutes passed by the time the recovery process was complete. Of course, this time will change depending on how many files the software is scanning and the processing power of your computer.
