From lonely trees and doctors making house calls to people learning to deal with natural disasters and war, the entries to The Sony World Photography Awards are once again incredibly varied and certainly worthy of recognition.

227,596 images across the awards’ Professional, Open and Youth competitions and today, Sony has announced which of the entries has made the shortlist (top 10) and which have been commended (top 50).

The shortlisted entries are very diverse with different styles, subject matter and genres appearing in what is the 1-th year of this worldwide competition taking place.

Within the shortlist are stunning architectural images and subtle landscapes alongside extraordinary images that depict the dominating world events of the last year. Stand out subject matters include a touching insight into the domestic life of women in Saudi Arabia, heartfelt confessions of Chinese school children, Russian bodybuilders preparing to flex muscle on stage and an intimate series of a private battle with a rare medical condition.

A selection of the shortlisted entries are shown below and the full list of images can be viewed on the World Photo website along with the winners and those who made the shortlist for the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards.
