The iPhone 4s’ camera prevails over all of its competition. The photos the camera outputs aid in Apple’s reputation for having quality products ahead of their time. Below you will find information on the camera, some photography apps, and the Olloclip, all of which work together to ensure that you to take the best pictures possible.

The camera on the iPhone 4S is equipped with eight megapixels; this is a 60% improvement on the iPhone 4. The camera now has face detection, and is noticeably quicker and focuses better than its predecessors and competitors. It has HDR mode like the iPhone 4, which allows users to produce HDR photos. According to Apple, the new and improved optics, "work together to make sure whatever light you have gives you the best image possible. The custom lens uses five precision elements to shape incoming light, which makes the entire image sharper. The larger f/2.4 aperture lets in more light, so photos look brighter and better. And the advanced hybrid infrared filter keeps out harmful IR light, so you’ll see more accurate and uniform colours." Video output is also high quality; it is recorded at 1080p30.

The Pro HDR app allows users to take High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos with the iPhone 4s and earlier models. According to the apps description, "Pro HDR captures an image exposed for the highlights and another exposed for the shadows. It then aligns and merges the images, giving you a gorgeous HDR image up to 8 megapixels like nothing you've ever seen from such a tiny device…. [It] is the first HDR app in the world with an automatic mode." Pro HDR is the first HDR app to offer automatic mode; it also has assisted Manual mode.

Though HDR is offered on the iPhone 4s, this app processes images quickly, can be sped up by reducing image quality, and has more in-app editing than the HDR feature that comes with the phone.

Camera +

Camera+ is an app that also helps iPhone 4s users produce quality photos. Some of its features are as follows:
  • A built in timer.
  • Higher quality zoom at 6x digital.
  • Burst mode, which shoots simultaneous pictures at lower quality to ensure that you capture important moments.
  • Scene options, such as Backlit, Sunset, etc. and effects like “Grunge,” not featured on iPhone 4s.
  • Options to adjust photo quality so that less space is used on the internal memory.
  • This optimised feature allows for faster sharing and saving.
  • The option to share directly to social media sites.
  • Touch exposure and focus.
  • The option to utilise the phone’s stabiliser to improve picture quality.

The Olloclip

A great accessory for the iPhone 4s is the Olloclip, which is a small and compact set of external lens. It includes three lenses:
  • A Fisheye lens: This "captures approximately a 180 Degree field-of-view and produces some striking images."
  • A Macro lens: This "applies roughly a 10X multiplier and allows you to focus the iPhone within 12-15mm of the subject."
  • A Wide-Angle lens: This provides the photographer with double the view of an iPhone.
