Tamrac Apache 6 Camera Bag Review: Apache 6

The Tamrac Apache 6, is a bigger version of the Tamrac Apache 4, and is a stylish, durable camera bag that holds a DSLR with attached lens (up to 6 inches), plus two or three extra lenses and accessories. It is the largest size in Tamrac's Apache range, with small and medium versions also available in the series. Tamrac says the Apache series combines the rugged look of the old west with modern styling, materials and features. Tamrac Apache bags are available through Intro 2020.

Tamrac Apache 6 Features

The Tamrac Apache 6 is made from sailcloth, giving it superior protection against the elements whilst remaining supple and flexible.

The front flap features a zipped pocket on the front, while each side of the bag features an expandable elasticated pocket ideal for water bottles or other accessories, including a compact tripod. The back of the bag features a 'Piggy Back Pocket', and has zips at the top and bottom. This can be used as a pocket for a map or other slim items, or you can undo both of the zips to allow the bag to piggy-back the handle of a wheeled suitcase. On the top of the bag there is a robust carry handle, and it also features a fully adjustable padded shoulder strap.

The main compartment features a padded pocket for a 12-13 inch laptop (up to 12x19.5inches), and can hold a DSLR with an attached lens of up to 6 inches, 2 or 3 extra lenses, accessories and personal items.

The main compartment is held shut with an easy to use clip, and can be secured with velcro as well. The Apache 6 also features an innovative 'Silent Closure System', whereby the velcro can be folded onto itself so it doesn't stick together when the bag is closed, making it a lot easier to open the bag in quiet places such as cathedrals or simply when you don't want to be noticed. If you want the extra security, then the velcro can be unfolded and secured so that it grips.

When the bag is opened, there is a see through window enabling you to place your details, or a business card there, in case of loss. The bag also has a tough, Hypatex bottom, which protects the bottom of the bag against abrasion and wear when it is placed on rough surfaces.

Tamrac Apache 6 Handling and Performance

The Tamrac Apache 6 feels really well made and rugged. We could easily fit a Nikon D810 with attached 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, a spare lens in the bag, a Sony Alpha 7 (with prime lens), and a 13inch Toshiba Ultrabook, so even if you have quite a large DSLR, you should have no problems fitting your gear in.

All the padding dividers in the main compartment are movable and secured by velcro, allowing you to customise the bag to fit your gear requirements exactly. The bag is well padded all over, so you can guarantee that your equipment will be kept safe, and the side flaps help to further protect your kit from the elements.

The small laptop pocket is handy, especially for photographers who like to upload photos on the move. The bag has a timeless inconspicuous style, making it ideal for a trip into the city and the tough sailcloth material makes it weatherproof should you get caught in the rain.

The Hypatex surface that covers the bottom of the bag is really grippy, so even if you were to place your bag on a sloped smooth surface, it will stay exactly where you left it. We think this is a better solution than having feet in each corner of the bag to prevent wear.

The Apache 6 is comfortable to wear, and the fully adjustable padded shoulder strap makes it really easy to fit the bag to your body. The carry handle is another extremely useful addition for moving the bag small distances.

The bag features a chunky and easily grippable clip on the front, which provides easy access to your equipment, and it's really simple to set the silent closure system up, too, if required. The front pocket has a number of compartments for accessories, a glasses case, pens, or chargers. We've put a small reflector in ours.

Value For Money

The Tamrac Apache 6 is available for £99 from Wex Photographic. This is a good price for a stylish bag made with top quality materials and that will protect your equipment with lots of padding while remaining relatively light.

A bag of a similar size and looks is the Lowepro Pro Messenger 180 AW, however this bag is heavier, and costs a lot more, at £144

Tamrac Apache 6 Verdict

Overall, the Tamrac Apache 6 looks good, is really comfy to wear and fits just the right amount of equipment for a day out shooting, including a small laptop, plus room for personal accessories in the front pocket. It doesn't shout 'camera bag' and is stylish, making it perfect for a trip to the city or other busy area. What stands out about this bag is the optional silent closure system - this is something unique that adds another level of versatility to the bag. You'll be hard pressed to find a similar camera bag of this quality for the same price.
