Car on the Nurburgring

In our last blog entry, we let the world know that we were lucky enough to visit the Nurburgring and we're making race car fans a little more jealous this week with more shots from our trip.

The Nurburgring has plenty of places you can stand, at a safe distance, with your camera kit to practice your fast-action panning skills and they're really easy to find. In fact, there's a really handy Google map that shows the racetrack along with 9 spots which are perfect for photographers. This includes Adenauer-Forst - a site of many incidents (and near misses), this corner offers shade and a nice hill to sit on. Cars move slowly through here, making it a good spot for motorsport photography newbies, but it is one of the more pleasant places to watch the track from.

Even though the viewing spots get you quite close to the track, longer focal lengths will still get you better pictures so either pack your tele prime or as Josh did, pack a zoom lens that has a decent telephoto end to it. If you go for the latter, you can also quickly change your focal length so you can still carry on capturing images as the cars get closer to you.

If you arrive at the track on a busy day you'll have ample opportunity to photograph cars racing around it which is a good thing as motorsport photography is definitely more tricky than it looks. We won't go into shutter speeds, tips on focusing and other technical points here as we have loads of advice on the site already about this (see the bottom of the article for links) but we will say that even though it can be hard work, it is a hell of a lot of fun!
