When capturing abstract shots, you need to think more about patterns, colours and texture rather than concentrating on objects as a whole. Look for patterns on buildings, rippled reflections on water or see what a shallow depth-of-field can do when applied to a close-up shot of a flower. You can also have quite a rather good abstract photo session from the comfort of your own home. You just need to think a little more out of the box and look beyond what the object is in front of you.

Working up close will allow you to fill the frame and leave enough mystery in the shot so the viewer has to think about your subject choice. For example, the images below, captured by Rick at home on a day off from ePz, are all rather standard objects you find in and around the home but thanks to the crop / angle, they're rather difficult to identify. This is the beauty of abstract photography, it transforms the ordinary into something rather special.

All of Rick's images were captured with the 16-300mm Tamron superzoom lens as it has good close focusing capabilities and various focal lengths built in which gave Rick ample opportunity to try various focal points before deciding which worked best. A one lens set-up is just easier to manage, too, especially when you're exploring inside and out.

Under each image, you'll find more information on what each object is just in case you can't figure it out and don't forget you can share your abstract images with us in the Tamron gallery. Staying with the home theme, we also have blog posts on capturing shots of indoor flowers and still life set-ups

This is an abstract shot of a lamp. The folds in the material create strong shapes when captured up close.

This is an abstract shot of window blinds. The strong lines and conversion to black & white, make this an eye-catching capture.

This is actually the edges of a chimney pot which reconfirms any object can be given an abstract twist.
