Leaves in a garden cast in shadow

Playing with light is what photography is all about and playing shadow and light off against each other is an extension of this which gives you the opportunity to bring something a bit different to what can be very ordinary.

To demonstrate this, we've been shooting with the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 MACRO 1:1 Di VC USD in our gardens this weekend, looking for shadowy areas which can be illuminated by a beam of light to add texture and interest. You can also do this in woodland areas when you're out walking if you don't have anywhere suitable in your own garden

Take a look at the below image of a flower in bud as an example. A flower about to bloom isn't something out of the ordinary but by using the balance of shadow/light the way we have, you can really see the shape/form of the flower you might have missed ordinarily. You can also see an incredible amount of detail in the leaf with lines and shapes really standing out.

Rose Bud

The best time of day for this style of photography is early morning or late evening when the sun is low in the sky (and temperatures are a little cooler, too).

You'll need to balance your aperture choice to ensure enough of your subject is in focus, but still giving you a nice blurred background. By doing so, you'll 'hide' any distracting subjects and focus will remain on your flower or plant.

Leaves
