Stone and brick walls are great photographic subjects for those who use textures in their Photoshop work.
| Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD MACRO in CreativeNo. We've not lost the plot! Brick and stone walls are well worth photographing as not only can they make interesting images on their own, they're really good for blending with other photos to add interest to plain backgrounds or to give a particular shot a different look / feel in Photoshop.
Once you start looking at detail rather than buildings as a whole, you'll soon see nothing apart from textures and detail. Don't think they have to be old walls either as modern buildings constructed from metal can have just as many interesting shapes and patterns as an old stone wall.
The wall image above was captured with the Tamron 16-300mm and a zoom lens is actually a really good choice for this type of photography as they give you the option to crop into detail and give tighter perspectives.
Subjects that have a pattern that repeat look great but don't think they all have to be symmetrical. Having a variety of colours and lines can work well, as too can uneven shapes.
You want to capture your photo straight on as flatter images work better when blending with other shots but that's not to say you can't play around with angles. Side light can help give your image more depth but do look out for distracting shadows.
