Now is the perfect time to be exploring your garden with a Tamron macro lens as the weather is pretty spot-on, flowers are looking their best and most people have plenty of time to spend on a short macro photography project.

Your standard zoom is fine but if you want to get closer to the flowers to hide the weeds you need a macro lens and we opted to use the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 MACRO 1:1 Di VC USD. If it's very bright attach a polarising filter to your lens to reduce glare and consider using a tripod that has a centre column that can be used in a horizontal position to get closer to flowerheads. A small reflector will help direct light to where it's needed and you don't even have to purchase one as you can create your own from foil and card.

Fill the frame and blur the background with a larger aperture as this will really focus attention on the flower. The 90mm lens was great for this, throwing the background nicely out of focus so the tulip 'pops' from the frame. Isolation is key for a good macro shot and that's exactly what we have in our examples.

Flowers are nice but look for interesting leaves too as these often have textures flowers don't have and look for out insects such as butterflies who may be sunning themselves.

If you don't fancy photographing flowers outside, you can capture images of blooms indoors with the help of our guides: Tamron Blog: Photographing Daffodils Indoors & Tamron Blog: How To Photograph Snowdrops With A Tamron Macro Lens Indoors.
