Ten Top Photographic Locations In The UK

There are some great photographic locations in Great Britain. Here's ePHOTOzine's round-up of ten of them.

Peak District

Just outside the city of Sheffield, this photogenic gem is full of rolling hills, drystone walls and idyllic cottages, perfect for a spot of landscape photography. Places worth visiting here include Bakewell, which is a lovely quaint town, and Chatsworth House, one of the grandest stately homes found in the UK.

Forest of Dean and Wye Valley

The forest of Dean is a great place to go if you're after some great shots of deer and wildlife. The forest of Dean is one of only a few places where there are wild hogs in Britain. Apart from the wildlife, the forest and the valley offers some exquisite foliage and flower shooting opportunities. The forest offers a wide variety of activities, including biking, climbing and river rafting for the active photographer, and of course you can get some great photos just by going for a stroll in the woods.

Snowdonia

Snowdonia is a beautiful county in North Wales and Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales, is surrounded by rugged countryside. If you're an adventurous photographer, and you like your hiking, then this is the destination for you. Electric mountain in Llamberis is also a great place for some atmospheric shots. The Dinorwig power station, which is inside the mountain, is an interesting place.

Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands are ideal if you want to escape from it all. Boasting superb views over rugged rolling hiss and serene lakes, it is truly an escape back to nature. Go during rutting season to get some amazing photos of the Stags and deer. Scotland is one of the last remaining places that you can see red squirrels, which were all but wiped out after the invasion of the American grey squirrel. Off the coast, you can see dolphins, whales and seals along with a wide variety of sea birds. A nature lover's haven.

London

From extreme country to extreme city, England's capital has some great urban views. From Buckingham palace and the changing of the guard to the London eye and Trafalgar square, almost everything in this city is a photo opportunity waiting to happen.

Lake District

The Lake District has numerous extremely photogenic places, Keswick and lake Derwent, Grasmere, and Lake Windermere, to name but a few. Some truly stunning vistas can be taken in the lake district, and it is truly stunning in the autumn, when all the leaves turn orange and golden.

Edinburgh

Another urban retreat, Edinburgh offers beauty and history in one versatile city. Visit during the Edinburgh festival for some great carnival shots. A visit to Edinburgh castle is a must, as it offer some of the best views over the city. The modern collides with the historical in this city that has opportunities for every type of photographer from close up shots to wide angle vistas.

Dartmoor Exmoor

Dartmoor is a truly beautiful landscape, and has the addition of the Dartmoor ponies, which make interesting subjects if you can capture a shot of them. Quite flat, and never too far away from the sea, Dartmoor is an ideal place to visit if you are going to Devon or Cornwall on holiday. It makes a great day trip, and a good break from the beach.

Norfolk Broads

The Norfolk broads are some of the prettiest waterways in the country. A boat holiday on the broads will create some amazing photo opportunities for water birds and water based imagery. Mostly flat, this landscape allows you to see for miles and miles on a clear day, enabling some great wide lens or panoramic shots.

Giant's Causeway, Ireland

The Giant's causeway is a surreal rock formation in the very north of Ireland. Legend tells of Irish and Scottish giants fighting each other by building a bridge to allow them to meet. These stepped stones disappearing into the sea provide a great opportunity to capture some stunning shots.
