Here, we look at the benefits of shake reduction in Pentax cameras.
| Pentax K-3 in Digital Camera Operation
All modern Pentax DSLR bodies have a unique and high-tech feature called Shake Reduction (SR) that will help you to get sharp, blur-free handheld shots with any Pentax lens.
The feature is especially useful when you're using a telephoto lens, shooting indoors without a flash, or in other low light conditions at dawn, dusk or nighttime.
How does it work?
The Pentax Shake Reduction system is electromagnetically controlled. it compensates for detected hand-held camera shake by moving a free floating image sensor.
The Pentax SR system delivers shake reduction with all the Pentax lenses ever manufactured, meaning you don't need a series of bulky and expensive optics.
The system works by using a ball-bearing-mounted oscillator unit along with four electromagnets that hold the free-floating image sensor. The amount of compensation necessary for movement is calculated by angular velocity sensors.
The Pentax SR system allows photographers, with care, to take photos that are sharp hand-held at a shutter speed 2.5-4 stops slower than the usual rule of thumb.
Get the best out of SR
To achieve the best results from Pentax SR make sure you follow these steps:
- Hold the camera with two hands, one on the grip and one supporting the lens barrel.
- Stand or squat squarely to give yourself a stable shooting position.
- Keep your elbows in.
- If you're panning, try to pan with your upper torso only to keep the movement smooth and minimise any up/ down movement with the camera.
