Leica CL Mirrorless Digital Camera

Leica has expanded its APS-C System line-up with the introduction of the Leica CL camera which features the same 24-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor as the Leica TL2, a built-in electronic viewfinder, touch-screen, plus 10fps continuous shooting.

Even though the CL and TL2 are made in the same place, the two cameras couldn't look more different with the Leica CL taking on the classic Leica style while the TL2 is slightly more futuristic.

The electronic viewfinder features EyeRes technology developed by Leica especially for this camera and it has a latency time below the threshold of perception and a resolution of 2.36 million pixels.

In addition to the electronic viewfinder, there are two dials for setting the aperture, shutter speed ISO value, and exposure compensation. Plus, an additional display on the top plate provides information about all relevant settings and exposure parameters.

As well as the 24Mp APS-C format sensor, you'll find a Maestro II series processor built-in along with a fast autofocus system with 49 metering points.

4K video can be captured at 30 frames per second and the CL is also equipped with an integrated Wi-Fi module so pictures and videos can be sent by wireless connection to smartphones, tablets or computers. Those who want to work remotely with the CL can use the Leica CL App for iOS or Android devices to alter exposure parameters or use their smart device as an off-camera viewfinder.

A wide variety of Leica lenses can be used on the Leica CL, including the portfolio of TL-Lenses and thanks to the L-Bayonet mount shared by the Leica TL- and SL-Systems, SL-Lenses can also be used without an adapter on the CL. Appropriate adapters are also available for using Leica M- and R-Lenses on the camera.

The black version of the Leica CL will be available from the end of November with the following RRPs (including VAT):

  • Leica CL Body Only - £2250
  • Leica CL + 18mm Lens - £3150
  • Leica CL + 18-56mm Lens - £3275

Leica 18mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens

Leica Elmarit TL 18mm F2 8 (4) (Custom)

As well as the Leica CL camera, Leica has also introduced a new 18mm f/2.8 pancake lens (equivalent to 27mm). The lens uses a single element for fast focus, rather than having to move a heavy group of lenses and it's currently the world's smallest wide-angle APS pancake available. The new lens is constructed in Japan and is just 20.5mm in size. With its introduction, it takes the total number of TL (APS-C) lenses up to seven.

The Leica 18mm f/2.8 pancake lens will be available at the same time as the CL with an RRP of £1020 inc. VAT. For more information and to see how the lens performs, take a look at our hands-on with the Leica 18mm f/2.8 pancake lens. We've also got hands-on with the CL and have captured sample photos with the new Leica mirrorless camera.
