If you are looking for a subject to inspire you then here is one that you can do virtually anywhere. Lines are all over the place, from wood grain or spider’s web in the micro scale to the horizon on the grand scale. When I started to look through my pictures I found masses, most taken because I liked the design that the lines made.

How To Use Lines In Your Photography: Lines

There is something that is common to most of the pictures however, the lines draw your eye towards something. The most obvious is where the lines converge at a vanishing point as this gives a picture depth and a very graphic feel.

When photographing lines it is essential that you think about the composition of the image, the lines need to lead you to the right place. Or they need to create some harmony or tension in the frame. The same is true in this spider’s web where the real interest is in the different focus on the strands.

The point is that you can go and look for lines to photograph, but often you don’t need to look because when you've been out for the day taking pictures, you will often find lines appear in your photos without thinking about it because their very presence is likely to make a good picture.
