The Samsung Galaxy S6 features a 16MP camera and can record Ultra HD video. Inside its body, you'll find an 8-core, 2.1GHz processor and 3GB of RAM. The body is constructed from glass and an aluminium bezel, giving it a more premium feel and the camera offers superb image quality when taking photos in the daytime.

The Huawei P8 is a smartphone featuring a 13-megapixel camera and clever photography features, including a really cool light painting mode. It has a slim metal body, a large 5.2inch fullHD screen and a 13-megapixel camera with a bright f/2.0 lens. Image quality is reasonably good and is quick and snappy in use. It also offers impressive value for money.

3. Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is the S6's older brother. It features a 16MP camera and a 2.5GHz quad-core processor that's accompanied by 2GB of RAM. The S5 shoots an impressive six frames-per-second for a 30-second burst and will record 4K, Ultra HD video. The Galaxy S5's camera captures good levels of detail and colours are replicated accurately.

4. Nokia Lumia 1020

Even though we reviewed the Nokia Lumia 1020 back in 2013, it's still riding high in our top ten thanks to the quality of images it can produce. It has a bright f/2.2 lens, image stabilisation and Xenon flash. The Nokia Lumia 1020 has a rather impressive 41-megapixel sensor and combines pixels for better image quality, as well as providing "lossless" zoom that can be used for both stills and video. Colour and detail is good, and skin tones look good as well.

5. Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S4 launched back in 2013 and it has a 13-megapixel sensor on the rear and a 2 megapixel camera on the front. The lens is a 35mm equivalent of 31mm and there is 4x digital zoom available. Anti-shake is built in along with 12 shooting modes. Images are generally well exposed with good colour reproduction and detail is good throughout the image, with a good control over purple fringing.

6. Sony Ericsson Satio 

Sony Ericsson Satio
 

The Sony Ericsson Satio is rather old now but never-the-less, it scored well when reviewed back in 2009. It as a 12.1Mp sensor, autofocus, 16x digital zoom, an Xenon flash, Geo-tagging support, Image stabiliser, Smile detection, Red-eye reduction and a built-in video light. Camera performance is good although, there is a lack of contrast and colour in some shots. Still, it is able to take images in a wide variety of conditions.

7. Honor 6 Plus

The Honor 6 Plus is one of the newest smartphones gracing our top ten but due to its 3.5 score, it's not as high up the chart as others. The Honor 6 Plus features a large 5.5inch screen and two cameras on the back which are used to produce photos with a greater depth of field and background blur. it has a long-lasting 3600mAh battery, which is generous compared to most smartphones, and it can also charge other devices thanks to the "reverse charging" mode. The lenses have a fixed aperture of f/2.0 and there's also a front-facing 8MP camera. Colour reproduction is reasonable, although detail is lower than other smartphones.

8. Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 features a 1inch 20 megapixel sensor, the lens is a 28mm f/2.8 Leica lens and full manual controls are available. There is a dedicated shutter release button, as well as a sliding switch to activate the camera and when pressed, the lens extends from the camera's body. The smartphone has a 4.7inch touch-screen with 1080p resolution and 4k video recording is possible along with RAW shooting. Images have good levels of detail, as well as bright saturated colours, particularly in good weather.

9. iPhone 5S

The iPhone 5S was announced in September 2013 and has an 8-megapixel back-illuminated sensor and a fixed f/2.2 aperture lens. There is auto image stabilisation and the camera can capture images at 10fps. Videos are recorded in full 1080p HD and  3x digital zoom is available during recording and you can also record slow-motion 720p HD videos at 120 fps. Even though camera modes are limited and the battery life isn't great, images produced are colourful and well exposed with plenty of detail.

10. Nokia Lumia 1520

The Nokia Lumia 1520 has a large 6inch screen and a 20.7-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss f/2.4 lens and built-in optical image stabilisation. The camera combines pixels for better image quality (creating smaller 5-megapixel images). The flash isn't Xenon, instead it's dual-LED and optical image stabilisation is built-in for improved low light performance. A dedicated two-step shutter release button lets you pre-focus and then take the shot with a full press. You can also use this to unlock the phone and go straight into the camera mode. Exposure and detail is generally good, plus colour reproduction is pleasing too.
