General Photography

When you begin your photography journey, you can quickly become lost in tutorials, articles and forums that all discuss this popular pastime. There's plenty of content that's really useful and will guide you on your way but among the good stuff, there's also not-so-useful advice but when you're starting out, it can be hard to differentiate between them.

"Sometimes, it's hard to separate what you need to retain and what you don't," says photographer Winston Fowlkes who, after thinking about the trials and tribulations of a photography newbie has put together a list of things he wished he paid more attention to when he was starting out. Some may seem like common knowledge but as someone just starting out, they're definitely things you want to pay attention to.

On this list are focal length, aperture, depth of field, shutter speed, the golden hour, shadows, light source direction, group photo focus, back button focus and composition. As well as listing the topics he wishes he paid more attention to, Winston goes through each term, explaining what they are and how they can be used (something those who are just starting out in photography will find useful).

For more beginner tips, head over to our techniques section. We also have advice on what photography equipment to buy in our 'Best Gear' section of the site.
