Here at ePHOTOzine, we have reviewed quite a few interchangeable lenses in our time so when you guys are out shopping for a new lens, you have as much information as possible for making your decisions with. Among our large review collection is a rather long list of lenses which are specifically designed to capture excellent macro images and as Spring's on its way, we thought now would be the perfect time to count down the top macro lenses ePHOTOzine's reviewed so when flowers do start springing up from the ground, you're armed and ready with the right photography kit.

1. Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS

Sony 90mm Macro FE Mount (2)

The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS is slick in use and produces excellent macro images. The price may be a little on the high side, but on the other hand, there is little choice for the Sony A7 range user, unless we look at less expensive manual focus lenses. Plus, it works so well on the A7R II that it should be an essential buy for those using this particular system.

2. Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD

Tamron SP 90mm F2 8 MACRO 1 1 Di VC USD (3)

Thank you for this review, could you please clarify what are the parameters and points of comparison to support your choices of best macro lenses? Are really any of these lenses in your list better than any of the canon macro lenses and if so, did you test them side by side and what are the specific areas where they outperformed the canon macro lenses?.

Thank you very much in advance,

Jorge

I have a favourite macro lens that I can't see being beaten by these. Yes, It's really old and manual but what a great lens it still is........

Micro-Nikkor 55mm f3.5
A1 kit 62 engraved pk-3
Manufactured January 1975 - 1977 (according to ser. No. on my lens)

My sample shot:- 1/200, f8, iso 125, w/b flash. Camera: Nikon D2x, hand held.
Shirt button was approx. 100mm from face of lens and illuminated by Nikon SB600
mounted directly on hot shoe with Globe diffuser on flash.
Closeness of subject and use of PK-3 (1:1) gave a depth of field of only 2 - 3mm at best.
The shot is as taken tonight and has only been lightened a little - no other improvements.
If you want to see it with a good read then use this link: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/55f35ai.htm

Hmm. I see the Panasonic is a little sharper at the edges wide open than the Olympus - which is sharper in the centre and sharpens up at the edges when stopped down a bit. It lacks the Panny's OiS, but on many Olympus bodies the IBS would beat it by a fair margin in any case. Given that 60 [120 equiv.] is arguably far more useful than 30 [60 equiv.] on a Macro lens it's pretty difficult to work out why the Panasonic would be more desirable for the job.

Don't get me wrong, I'm quite a Panasonic fan and I'm sure it's a good lens, but given its focal length and the competition, I wouldn't even think about adding it to my kit for macro use [but I do have an EM1 too, so the OiS is not any sort of inducement for me].
