Photobooks are a great way to show-off and preserve photographs but trying to come up with different ways to display your images in the books, particularly when you've created a few, can become tricky. With this in-mind, we've put together 5 tips which will hopefully give you new ideas and inspiration for next time you design a photobook.

There are plenty of companies out there who create photobooks, many of which work closely with online portfolio specialists SmugMug so when users have created their websites / portfolios with SmugMug, they can easily design photo books (and more) without having to leave SmugMug's site in search of a company who can help you turn your photos into books, gifts and prints.

What To Use Them For?

As well as using them as photo albums where you keep shots from your holidays and days out, photo books can be used by photographers as a way to showcase their work to clients. The different styles and sizes available mean you can customise a design to create the perfect presentation.

Capture shots of your kids and even their creations which you can place in a photo book and send to Grandma or keep them for your children to have once they're a little older.

If you enjoy a particular hobby, apart from photography, why not document it in a photo book? You can also use photo books as scrap books, documenting trips you've taken, places you visited and things you've achieved in the last year. Try scanning or taking photos of tickets, maps and other items which you can use as backgrounds or sit along side your portraits and other shots.

Photobooks don't have to be a mish mash of all the recent events in your life. Why not make separate ones for all the big things that happen? A holiday photobook, for example, will enable you to theme the book, so it doesn't look too busy. You can then put backgrounds on all the pages that relate to your theme, for example shells and buckets and spades on the beach. This will really help set the scene for your photos more than a generic background would.

Panoramas, or sweeping vista shots of scenery can make great covers for your book. You can also show off your skills by putting a panorama as a double page spread in the book, filling two pages with just one image, to really draw attention to it.

Most photobook software allows you to adjust the angles of the photos you're using so why not try and overlap them slightly to create a collage that's not only more interesting to look at but it'll mean you can use more photos on your pages.

Try adding a speech bubble to that photo of your dad buried in the sand, or a comment on a specific photo if you want to remember something specifically related to it. This can also help other viewers of your book to understand why photos mean something to you.
