In a rather short period of time, the quality of the images smartphones can produce has not only improved, some even produce better quality images than some compact cameras. Smartphone giants such as Apple, Samsung and LG have crammed so many megapixels and photography features into our smart devices that actually, you can head out without your camera and still come home with a collection of images you can share in an album.

But which smartphone is worthy of sitting in the number one spot, taking the title of 'best image quality' once and for all? Well, some believe that the camera quality has got so good on all of the most popular smartphones that actually, it's more about brand loyalty and personal preference nowadays rather than the technology found in the phones.

To see just how true this theory is, Marques Brownlee has shared a rather interesting video over on Youtube that puts 5 of the best smartphones for photography through a side-by-side comparison test but instead of saying what each smartphone has to offer, it's the photos Marques is interested in. Basically, he's captured identical photos with each smartphone and has asked the public which they think is the best photo. The most common photos we capture are compared (landscape, portraits, architecture etc.) and no brands are mentioned to remove the unconscious bias we all have towards them.

You can join in with the experiment yourself which starts around the 1:20 mark and at the end of the video, you can find out which smartphone captured which images.

Here are the smartphones that were put through their paces: OnePlus 3T, Samsung Galaxy S8, Google Pixel XL, Apple iPhone 7+ and LG G6.

would have loved it if they could compare 100% crops of each as well, beside lighting DR etc its difficult to see the levels of detail vs processing just with the normal shots used in video, thanks though, very nice to see a comparison like this.

I'd say it doesn't matter which phone you use as the images are all fine for what they'll mainly be used for - and that is looking at on a phone. My 5s is great for photography and I love the pix from it.
