Here, you'll find 50 lenses, by various manufacturers that cover a variety of focal lengths, ordered from 1-50 so you can easily see which lens performed the best. The list is based on the scores found in ePHOTOzine's reviews and the first 2 lenses reign supreme thanks to them receiving the full 5 stars that can be awarded by the ePHOTOzine team.

For those who don't own a Sony Alpha / A Mount camera and accidently stumbled across our top 50 Sony Alpha / A Mount lenses feature, you should head over to our 'Best Gear' section where you'll find top lists that focus on other brands, lens focal lengths, camera types, accessories and more.

Number 1: Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD (F017)

Tamron SP 90mm F2 8 MACRO 1 1 Di VC USD (3)

The 90mm from Tamron has always had a good reputation and the latest version of this reliable lens doesn't disappoint. This one takes performance to a new peak and is very comfortable to use. The Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD offers superb sharpness, fast and silent AF, and beautiful bokeh. CA is well controlled, there's virtually no distortion in images and the lens is very resistant to flare.

There does remain the possibility of picking up the previous model at a much lower price but that is always a dilemma when lenses are updated. Please note, the Sony A mount version of this lens does not feature VC, as Sony A mount cameras feature built-in image stabilisation.

Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

Tamron SP 85mm F1 8 Di VC USD (2)

The Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD performs impeccably and handles really well. The price is reasonable and actually, there's very little not to like about this lens. Yes, it offers a slightly slower maximum aperture of f/1.8 (many 85mm lenses are f/1.4 designs) but if you don't have a definite need for an f/1.4 then the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD delivers superb quality at a more reasonable price level. CA, flare, distortion etc. are handled really well. Bokeh looks pleasing and you also get a 5-year warranty when you purchase this lens which is reassuring. Please note, the Sony A mount version of this lens does not feature VC, as Sony A mount cameras feature built-in image stabilisation.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Sigma 50mm F1 4 DG Art (1)

Sigma has created a lens which performs well in terms of sharpness and other optical attributes, for a fairly reasonable price. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens offers outstanding sharpness, virtually no CA or distortion and when compared to similar alternatives, it's a bit of a bargain. Build quality is excellent and fast, silent focusing is the cherry on the cake.

This combination of price versus performance will almost certainly win many fans for this lens, even despite its large size and weight for a 50mm optic.

Samyang 35mm f/1.4 ED AS UMC

Samyang 35mm Lens

If you're looking for a sharp, moderate wide angle with a fast aperture and can live with focusing manually, you needn't look further.

The performance at f/1.4 is amazing for a lens that costs under £400, and this is with good build quality, low CA, distortion and falloff that is typical of lenses with a fast aperture like this. Flare may be more of an issue than with manufacturer's own lenses, but so long as you take care in situations that may cause problems, this lens will reward you with sharp, contrasty images and money left for other things.

Overall, the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 offers amazing performance at a very good price.

Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

Tamron SP 45 F1 8 VC USD (4)

Tamron has created an excellent lens which is certainly more than capable of delivering excellent results in a wide range of conditions. The Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD sports premium features such as weather sealing, and exotic optical coatings in a reasonably lightweight body. Travellers, in particular, will appreciate the relatively light weight lens for its size, weather sealing and robust build.

The price may seem a little high for some but this is the only thing that blots an otherwise clean copy-book. Overall, the Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD delivers excellent results with premium features. Please note, the Sony A mount version of this lens does not feature VC, as Sony A mount cameras feature built-in image stabilisation.

16mm f/2.0 ED AS UMC CS

Those looking for wide aperture lenses for the APS-C or smaller format camera need not continue looking at full frame lenses, that generally cost and weigh more now this lens is available. Although some photographers may find manual focusing off-putting, spending a little time practising and getting used to how the lens behaves will pay dividends in the long run. This is especially true when considering how little the Samyang 16mm f/2.0 ED AS UMC CS costs and how excellently it performs.

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC OS HSM

Sigma seems to have pulled out all the stops for this lens, the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM C. Not only is it capable of producing images with excellent sharpness, but the zoom range is very useful, as is the close focusing ability and the optical stabilisation. The build quality is good for the price, too.

There are a couple of minor niggles with the lens, such as the focus ring rotating during autofocus, but to be honest these are only minor issues. In terms of performance for the price, this lens is superb!

The Ultrasonic Drive makes the focusing speed more sprightly than can be found on other Tamron lenses. Overall, this lens is a very good performer that's built well and represents good value for money. Please note, the Sony A mount version of this lens does not feature VC, as Sony A mount cameras feature built-in image stabilisation.

Laowa 105mm f/2 T3.2 Smooth Trans Focus

Laowa 105mm STF Lens (4)

Laowa certainly knows how to make exciting and different lenses. It's always good to see lenses that go beyond the pure technicalities, offering some unique “feel” or “character” to images. The Apodization filter is very clever, it works and the bokeh offered is indeed superb, whilst the sharpness of the main subject is not compromised in the slightest.

Despite some handling inconvenience, the Laowa 105mm f/2 T3.2 Smooth Trans Focus lens is fun to use and a challenge to become proficient with. It may not be for everyone, but for those willing to get to grips with it the reward will be in that sublime, creamy smooth bokeh.

The build quality is very good, although it is a little strange that it is not weather sealed, as you may expect lenses pitched at this level to be. Even so, this should prove to be a very popular lens, as its predecessor was thanks to the improved autofocus speed and anti-reflective coatings, which are both welcome improvements.

This is a very versatile lens with some unique features for the focal length. It has commendably high central sharpness and very low levels of CA. Even if you discount the fact that this 8mm fisheye is a high-quality lens, that's reasonably priced, this is a very interesting lens. It is capable of producing images with excellent sharpness, the build quality is good, and the removable hood adds extra flexibility, allowing the lens to be used as a partial circular fisheye on full frame cameras. Even the lack of autofocus shouldn’t put you off this lens, as the depth of field available with a fisheye, makes focusing manually incredibly easy.

Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA SSM

Carl Zeiss SAL Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA SSM

Lenses bearing the Carl Zeiss name tend to be luxury items and carry a luxury price tag as a result. Although this lens performs well in many areas, the high CA levels at fast apertures and fairly poor sharpness towards the edges of the frame at maximum aperture isn't typically what you'd expect of Carl Zeiss.

Even with the excellent weather resistant build, the asking price still seems very expensive for a 50mm f/1.4. There will be those who find this good value for their needs, but only a niche group of people will be able to justify such an outlay for this lens.

Although this basic lens may not be for everyone, those looking for an ultra-wide lens, which is capable of delivering excellent quality when used within its limitations can't go far wrong with this 14mm from Samyang.

Centre sharpness is excellent from maximum aperture, and the quality towards the edges of the frame improves to excellent levels with the lens stopped down to f/5.6 or beyond. Discerning photographers may find the wavy distortion and pronounced falloff of illumination towards the corners off-putting, but those on a budget should be delighted with the quality of images this lens can deliver, for a bargain basement price.

Without a doubt, this lens out performs some manufacturer's 50mm offerings, but not all of them. The sharpness in the centre is this lens' strong point, so if you tend to shoot at wide apertures this could be the lens for you. The Sigma 50mm also offers low vignetting and the 7mm filter size is the same as most professional level zooms.

Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM

Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM

Sigma's 10-20mm is a very interesting lens indeed. The comparatively bright constant f/3.5 aperture make composing and confirming focus in low light conditions easier than with its slower predecessor, which will certainly help those shooting dimly-lit interiors and at night.

The 82mm filter thread may put some off this lens, as the price for filters such as circular polarisers sky-rockets when you venture beyond 77mm. Even taking this into account, this optic still represents excellent value for money.

Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM

Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Interchangeable Lens

Having such a wide field of view, coupled with the close minimum focus distance of only 24cm, makes this lens a lot of fun to use. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, especially if you like to use filters on your wide lenses, and a lens as wide as this can be quite a challenge to use well. Saying that, if you find yourself hitting the stop at the wide end of the zoom on your current APS-C compatible ultra-wide zoom, then this lens is certainly worth a look.

Overall the Sigma 8-16mm is well built, well priced and performs pretty well. Just like its full-frame 12-24mm cousin, this lens is one of a kind and should find a home in plenty of photographer's kit bags.

It is a shame that the levels of chromatic aberration are so high towards the edges, but if you can live with correcting this afterwards in image editing software, then this lens will reward you with sharp, contrasty wide angle images for a very reasonable price.

During testing, this Sigma 70-200mm lens has proved itself quite capable of producing excellent results. For the most part, the sharpness in the centre is very good, or even excellent. Unfortunately, its Achilles heel is the performance wide open at 70mm, where it is a bit lacklustre.

Sigma's optical stabiliser is certainly capable and is about as effective as the system found in marque lenses which adds to the feeling of good value this lens provides.

On paper, this lens looks like a winner and the specification for the price is very good indeed. Although the resolution in the centre is usually good, the same cannot be said about the quality towards the edges, especially at wide apertures.

Saying that the build quality is good, the optical stabiliser works quite well and the 17-50mm is capable of excellent results if used within its limits. If you can't compromise to stay within those limits, you may find better value with an alternative lens.

Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM

The Sigma 120-400mm represents a good value choice for those looking for a super-telephoto lens, without the extortionate price tag associated with some camera manufacturer's own lenses in this range. For its price, it has excellent build quality and a good range of useful features, such as Optical Stabilisation and silent focusing, but some aspects of handling could still be improved, like the looseness of the zoom mechanism.

The lens does have some limitations, but so long as you are aware of these, it is still capable of producing very good quality images in the right hands.

Summing this lens up in a paragraph or two is actually quite difficult, as it's almost like it's two completely different lenses at once. The first one being an f/2.8 zoom lens, which should be great for low light photography, but unfortunately falls slightly below par in terms of performance, especially at focal lengths beyond 35mm. Here the resolution at maximum aperture just isn't what you'd expect for a flagship lens from any lens manufacturer.

Now, if we were to consider this lens as having a maximum aperture of f/4, it would be amongst the best performing lenses covering these focal lengths. Sharpness across the frame is excellent.

It's a shame the Sigma 24-70mm has this split personality as the build quality is generally very good, and the lens is very pleasant to use.

If you're after a high-performance f/2.8 lens, you may find better performance elsewhere. On the other hand, if your photography allows you to stop down to f/4 or smaller much of the time, then this lens is a superb performer.

Although the Sony DT 50mm lens is not the best performer when it comes to resolution at maximum aperture, it should still make a great portrait lens when stopped down a little for those on a budget. The out of focus blur is quite smooth and pleasant too. Stopping the lens down to moderate aperture yields images with superb resolution across the frame, which isn't bad for a lens of this price.

The article is misleading people. Tamron does not include VC in their A-mount lens versions. Tamron believes the built-in sensor-based stabilization (Sony's "Steady Shot") is so good there's no need for Tamron's lens-based stabilization ("VC").
