Best Webcams 2020

Whether you're working from home, live streaming, on-line gaming, creating YouTube content, chatting to friends over Skype or Zoom, you're going to want a webcam. Many laptops have one built-in, but if you're using a desktop computer or want to get a better quality image, then a dedicated webcam is what you'll need to look at. Here we go over what you need to look for in a webcam, as well as some of the options available, with features and prices to suit all needs.

What to look for in a webcam

The majority of webcams, even the most basic, will offer both a camera, and a microphone, so that you don't need to worry about a separate microphone. For basic use, for when you're working from home, a standard webcam will work, for example if you're simply using Skype / Zoom or other apps to keep in touch with friends and business colleagues. *

A number of cameras feature auto-focus, which means the camera can focus on you specifically, or if you're recording other things with the camera, it gives additional versatility for getting close-ups.

If you're into on-line gaming, and looking for a camera for streaming, for example using Twitch, or YouTube, then you'll want something with high image quality, with FullHD video (1920x1080), and you may even want to go for something that can record at 60fps, for smoother video quality. There are a number of microphone options, and if you're streaming you might want a separate microphone or headset so that the microphone is recording your voice rather than background noise.

If you like the idea of producing video content for YouTube, a good FullHD webcam should work well, however for even higher video quality, then you could look at a 4K webcam. Particulary if you're presenting to the camera, and likely to want to crop and zoom in to the image. Although you'll most likely need a high performance computer if you're wanting to edit 4K video, as well as a fast internet connection.

Check what computer / operating system the webcam works with, as some are Windows only.

Quick guide to video resolution

720p = 1366x720 resolution, roughly 1mp - fine for chatting with others online, using Skype, Zoom etc. Sometimes referred to as HD.
1080p = 1920x1080 resolution, also known as FullHD, roughly 2mp - good quality video suitable for a wider variety of uses, including streaming, producing video, etc.
4K = 3840x2160 (UHD) or 4K CINE = 4160x2160, roughly 8mp - very high quality video, for more advanced needs. Can be used if you want to take still images from video, as the resolution is roughly the same as 8mp.

FAQ: Can I use my current digital camera as a webcam?

Yes you can, however, you'll need to take the HDMI output from your camera, and use a capture card or capture device to get that on to your computer. Often these capture cards cost more than a dedicated webcam. For example, the Mirabox Game Capture Card (USB3) starts at £99, whilst the Elgato Game Capture 4K60 Pro MK.2 is available for around £190, and needs to be installed into your computer. If you've a range of lenses, and want the additional features of a digital camera, then this can be a good option, particularly if you have a high-quality camera with 4K output.
