1. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ90

Lumix DC-TZ90

The TZ90 is a well-equipped travel camera that's available for around £269. Panasonic's TZ range has been around since 2006 and each year there's a refresh.

As well as the Leica branded 30x optical zoom lens, it now offers a new 20-megapixel sensor and a tilting 3inch touch-screen. The tilting screen has resulted in a slightly larger camera size, and increased weight, compared to the TZ80. On the back, there's an electronic viewfinder (EVF) with eye-detection and dioptre correction.

Macro focus lets you focus on subjects 3cm away from the front of the lens, and hybrid 5-axis image stabilisation helps keep shots and video steady in low light or when using a lot of optical zoom. The ISO range extends from ISO80 up to ISO6400, and the camera can shoot at 10fps at the full resolution of 20 megapixels.

The Lumix TZ80 is still available if you want to spend less.

2. Panasonic Lumix FZ82

Panasonic Lumix FZ82 FZ80

The Panasonic Lumix FZ82 offers a lot of camera, for a very reasonable price. With 4K video and a wide-angle (20mm equivalent) 60x optical zoom lens, the camera offers almost everything you could possibly want from an ultra-zoom bridge camera. The camera is easy to use, and the touch-screen makes it easy to change settings. Image quality is good, with the camera producing images with good colour reproduction. For outdoor shooting, as well as a more steady grip, the camera's electronic viewfinder (with an improved resolution), helps here. The only thing that could make this camera better, is the provision of a tilting screen, but if you can live without it, then the Panasonic Lumix FZ82 makes an excellent choice.

The Lumix DMC-FZ72 is also still available if you'd prefer to spend a little less cash.

3. Nikon Coolpix B500

Nikon Coolpix B500 Black (5)

The Nikon Coolpix B500 is an ultra zoom bridge camera and for its price point, it has a lot going for it with a wide-angle 40x optical zoom lens, tilting screen, and Full HD video recording with stereo sound. On top of this, there's Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth for quick and easy connection to your smartphone - something that's becoming more and more important in today's market. We weren't overly impressed with the image quality when using the full optical zoom, but if you're sharing photos to social media, then colour and exposure were both reliable, and the camera should keep most people happy.

There's the newer Coolpix B600 but it didn't score quite as well and it's more expensive.

4. Olympus Stylus Tough TG-6

2 Tough Tg 6 Red Product 010

Tough cameras are incredibly useful pieces of kit as they can survive in water, are resilient to drops, dust doesn't cause problems and they still work in really cold temperatures. There are quite a few tough cameras available now but the Olympus Stylus Tough TG-6 stands out as it goes beyond what you would expect from a less expensive compact camera. Using a 12mp sensor, noise performance is good, and the camera offers 4K video, and high-speed video with FullHD video recording at 120fps possible. There's a bright f/2.0 lens, making it more suited to underwater photography compared to other waterproof cameras, as there is less light underwater.

5. Canon Powershot SX730 HS

Canon Powershot SX730 HS

The Canon Powershot SX730 HS offers a lot of optical zoom in a travel zoom camera, with a whopping 40x optical zoom lens. With built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth, it's easy to set up a connection to your smartphone, making transferring images easy and quick. The SX730 offers the best colour performance of cameras in this class, with good colour straight from the camera, in a variety of lighting conditions. The camera is easy to use with a number of auto and scene modes, and for the more advanced there are manual controls. FullHD video recording is available, and with optical image stabilisation, video quality is good, although competitors now offer 4K video. The only question really is whether you should get this version with a tilting screen, or the previous version with a fixed screen.

The Canon Powershot SX720 HS is also a great little travel/pocket zoom camera.

6. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX500

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX500

The Sony Cyber-shot WX500 is a really small digital camera available with a 30x optical zoom lens. The camera gives bright colourful images and is easy to use, as well as being quick, with a fast continuous shooting mode. Noise is a concern, however, if you avoid viewing images at 100% magnification, then this shouldn't be too much of a problem, particularly if you plan on sharing your images on-line. The WX500 offers built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity making it easy to share images with friends and is available in a number of colours. With good battery life and shooting modes to suit beginners as well as the more advanced, the WX500 would make a good choice.

7. Nikon L840

Nikon Coolpix L840

There’s no doubt that the Nikon Coolpix L840 is a very easy camera to use and produces pleasing photos. Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC pairing is a welcome upgrade from the L830, and the increased zoom reach adds extra versatility. The L840 is a good all-round camera that doesn’t have any major performance bugbears. Once its price inevitably drops, it’ll make a sound buy if you value chunky ergonomics over outright portability.

8. Nikon Coolpix L340

Nikon Coolpix L340

The Nikon Coolpix L340 is a minor upgrade over the L330, introducing a 28x zoom, high build quality and comfy ergonomics. The 20.2MP CCD sensor carried over to the L340 generates acceptable image quality, providing you’re not expecting detail, image noise levels and dynamic range to be anything better than mediocre. But ultimately even a camera that performs as averagely as the L340 is sure to be a bestseller thanks entirely to its modest price, versatile lens and effortless ease to use.
