Thanks to the app market booming, you no longer have to part with your hard-earned cash to pick up a decent photo editor. Of course, there are limitations to what the free photo editors on the market can offer but if you're just looking for something that offers basic editing controls that are quick and easy to use, you'll probably find that one of the many free photo editing apps will fit the bill.
Since the last release of Windows, the company has shown they're really embracing apps and this move towards the app-based world continues in Windows 10. As a result, as well as having free photo editors on portable devices, you can now have them on your desktop machine but with so many featuring in the Windows Store, which do you choose? Well, we've put a list of the free top 10 photo editing apps together with a little bit of information on them to help you make an informative choice.
Adobe Photoshop Express
Fans of Adobe or Photoshop will probably be drawn to this app purely because of its name. Adobe Photoshop Express gives users a quick and easy way to edit photos. A wide variety of adjustments and filters can be applied, although you will have to make in-app purchases should you wish to use any of the premium filters. Obviously, it's not as advanced as Photoshop but for a basic editor, particularly if you're editing images on the go, it's pretty decent.

Photo Editor
This is an easy to use editor that's packed with filters which can be quickly applied to images. Basic edits, such as cropping and adjusting brightness levels, can be performed, plus there's also tools for drawing and adding text to shots. The menu system is well organised and those new to photo editing will appreciate how simple the app makes the photo editing process. Those with more experience will probably find Photo Editor too basic and even though some comments suggest you can't save images, you actually can but instead of clicking a save button you just hit the 'apply' button.

Phototastic Collage
This app features over 100 templates for creating photo collages with, plus stickers, text and photo effects can also be applied to your shots. Phototastic Collage is rather basic but the results are pleasing, plus it's really easy to use. You can even make photo masks / shapes to place your images in. There are quite a few in-app purchases to access some features but they're not a necessity.

Fotor
In the Fotor app you'll find basic editing tools, options for adding text to images, 1-tap enhancements and an option to create collages. There are tilt-shift and raw converters as well as different FX effect categories. Fotor is great for those who want to make quick and simple edits to images, plus it's quick and easy to use. There's also plenty of preset options available should you not want to spend too long editing photos.

KVADPhoto+
This image editor contains a range of tools that give the user multiple photo retouching and editing options. A wide variety of effects, filters, colour and text tools are available, plus there are options for adding frames to images and various enhancement features are included. To fully access all of the features KVADPhoto+ has to offer you do need to purchase the full app but you still get a decent amount of tools in the free edition. Auto tools include options for fixing levels, lens boost and tilt shift while those wanting more manual control over edits will be happy to hear colour, temperature, brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, blur and sharpen can all be adjusted this way. Various transform tools are included as well as options for creating collages.

Fhotoroom
This free app offers up to 41Mp HD photo editing, supports 150 RAW file formats and includes several editing tools and filters. As well as having undo / redo functions, the app has a history list giving you access to unlimited undo steps and non-destructive editing. Several presets are available along with adjustable frames, light leak options and design styles. For social network fans, you can follow, like, comment and share photos with others and learn the 'filter recipes' others have created. Fhotoroom looks very professional, is easy to use and produces excellent results.

Autodesk Pixlr
If you've used Pixlr on Android or indeed as the free web version, you'll already know it's a decent photo editor which you don't have to part with money for. As well as quick fixes, you can add borders, overlays and effects to images to give them an individual twist. It is very basic so it won't be for everyone and it's been said that some of the features loved by Android users don't currently feature in the Windows 10 version but it still scores well. Tools listed included autofixes, heal, red-eye, text, crop, contrast and colour. Plus, double exposures can be created and the colour splash brush can be used to selectively colour one part of your shot. However, to access these two features along with additional effects, overlays, and borders you have to sign up for a free Pixlr account and sign in.

Perfect 365
This is a portrait based app that's designed to make portrait touch-ups and enhancements easy to apply. There are some fun features including the ability to apply make-up and it also has a one-tap edit function. The current version of Perfect 365 features a new eyebrow enhancement tool as well as a new 'hot style' which automatically makes adjustments and applies make-up. It's a fun app to play with but isn't something that should be taken too seriously. Plus, to save images of a decent size, you need to pay for at least one of the in-app purchases.

Coollage
This app is all about creating collages. Pick a selection of photos and the app will combine them to generate a collage. The images can be moved around or adjusted in size if you don't like the way the app presents them but some say the options are limiting. For a basic collage creator, it's easy to use and it processes images quickly. Although, the app does feature adverts which some may find annoying and unless you want to make an in-app purchase, Coollage place a self-promoting watermark in your collages.

SuperPhoto Free
With this app, you can add filters and effects to your images. Although, unless you pay for the full version, you are very limited on the number of filters you can access. The SuperPhoto Free app is easy to use, however and does give users access to artistic filters free of charge even if there's not that many of them to pick from.
