Vanguard VEO 3T+ 264CB Travel Tripod

Quick Verdict

The VEO 3T+ 264CB tripod combines what we like about the VEO 3+ range with the features of a travel tripod. Essentially, you get the best of both worlds; a well-built, reassuringly sturdy carbon fibre tripod that's also compact and easy to fit in a bag when travelling. The ball head is a great accessory that makes purchasing the kit worthwhile and the fact that you can use the Multi-Angle Central Column as a multi-mount means the tripod has multiple uses. Plus, you can combine a leg with the centre column to make a really useful monopod for days you don't want to carry a full tripod around.

+ Pros

  • Compact size
  • Combines a full-size and travel tripod in one
  • Multi-Mount Option
  • Turns into a monopod
  • Quick Set-Up

- Cons

  • The weight may make it a questionable 'travel' tripod for some

The Vanguard VEO 3+ tripod range was introduced last year and it features full-size tripods (such as the Vanguard VEO 3+ 263CB we put to the test) that have multiple mount support, a built-in monopod, multi-angle central column and easy clean leg locks. The VEO 3+ tripods are great but their size doesn't make them the optimal choice for travellers who want to take a tripod on trips so Vanguard has taken the versatility and usefulness of these full-size tripods and put them into tripods that are designed for those who travel so you get all of the great features of the full-size tripod in a support that's smaller. The new range is called the VEO 3T Travel Tripod Collection and we're putting the VEO 3T+ 264CB model to the test so we can take a look at the features Vanguard has built-in and, more importantly, find out how it performs outdoors.

The VEO 3T+ 264CB tripod's spec list makes it look like it could be a great travel photography companion but there's only one way we can find out how good it is at the job it's designed to do and that's by putting it to the test so let's start...

Vanguard VEO 3T+ 264CB Travel Tripod Features

Vanguard VEO 3T+ 264CB Travel Tripod

The VEO 3T+ Collection of travel tripods from Vanguard combines the versatility of the VEO 3+ range with the size, neatness, design and features you expect to find on a tripod that's travel-friendly.

The VEO 3T+ 264CB is a modern-looking support with a carbon fibre finish and a Multi-Angle Central Column (MACC) that has a multitude of uses. You can also attach additional accessories using a support arm (not provided). The MACC can be moved almost 360-degrees in any direction and when combined with the included VEO+ MA1, it can be used as a multi-mount so you can attach a light, microphone or even another camera. The central column also features a scale that you can use alongside the other degree markings on the tripod to replicate shots.

As it's made from carbon fibre, it won't feel as cold as tripods made from steel, for example, but there are 2 rubber grips for added comfort and grip that will give added protection from cold should you be planning on vising locations that have slightly cooler temperatures.

We've seen push-button leg locks on previous Vanguard tripods and praised their ease of use so we're happy to see them on the VEO 3T+ 264CB so the leg angle can be set at various degrees. Vanguard actually says that the locks allow photographers to go from a macro photography set-up to a landscape-shoot-ready position in around 30-seconds so this is something we will be putting to the test in the performance section.

Another feature found on previous Vanguard tripods that you see on the VEO 3T+ 264CB are the ergonomic half-turn twist locks that allow you to quickly lock/unlock the leg sections. They can also be easily taken apart for cleaning which you'll need to do after a visit to the beach as removing sand and sea salt will prolong the life of your tripod.

Spiked as well as rubber feet are supplied so you can set-up the tripod on multiple terrains and for extra stability, there's a retractable hook so you can add weight.

To keep your tripod safe while travelling, a padded shoulder bag is provided which also makes it easier to store the tripod when it's not in use. Plus, the VEO 3T+ 264CB folds down to 48cm so it won't take up too much room either.

For days you don't want to use a full tripod on your trips, all of the VEO 3T+ tripods can be converted to a monopod by removing the marked tripod leg and central column which you then screw together to create a monopod.

You do get a choice of heads with the VEO 3T+ range or you can purchase the tripod on its own in aluminium or carbon fibre versions which have 23mm or 26mm leg diameter options. Each tripod model also has a reversible thread, giving you the options of a 1/4" or 3/8" thread which means you don't need to use an adapter.

As for head choices, the VEO 3T+ tripods either come with a 3-way Pan-Head or Ball Head. The Arca compatible VEO 2 PH-36 and VEO 2 PH-38 heads allow the photographer to turn the handle in 90-degree segments something Vanguard says left-handed photographers will find particularly useful while two new Dual Axis Ball Heads (VEO 2 PH-36 and VEO 2 PH-38) feature an additional panning function on the quick-release mount, an addition to the one found on the base of the head.
