Quick Verdict

The Vanguard VEO Select 41 is a great urban option for those that want adequate personal belongings room along with the ability to fit a lot of camera kit. The versatile carrying options and security given by the rear access will be great in busy situations. The bag is quietly trendy and doesn't shout camera bag - but you may be disappointed if you want quick access to all of your kit.

+ Pros

  • Secure
  • Versatile
  • Good padding for kit protection
  • Rain cover included

- Cons

  • Main rear access is hampered when worn as a shoulder bag
  • Square design won't be to everyone's taste

The Vanguard VEO Select 41 is a versatile camera bag that can be used as both a rucksack and shoulder bag. It features full rear and side flap opening and is available in both khaki green and black. It can hold a DSLR with lens attached, 2-3 extra lenses, a flash and accessories. Also available in the range are the VEO Select 35, which is a smaller shoulder bag, the larger VEO Select 45M which is designed to hold mirrorless kit and the VEO Select 49, which can hold 2 camera bodies. The VEO Select 41 is available for around £108 on Amazon, depending on colour. Here we take a look at the black version.

 Vanguard VEO Select 41 Features

The VEO Select 41 is a slim and square bag, with a very classic and neat design. On the front, there's a large neoprene-covered zipped pocket, ideal for personal documents, notebooks or maps. On either side of there are 2 vertical zipped pockets leading to a shallower pocket in front of this which houses the rain cover.

On the right-hand side, there's an elasticated pocket and clip designed for a tripod. On the left-hand side, there's another clip, two carry handles secured by a velcro wrap and a zipped side-access flap to the main compartment. On the outside of this, there's a small zipped pocket ideal for memory cards.

On the top of the bag, you'll find a large double-zipped pocket giving access to a padded compartment which can be used for your personal belongings - it will fit a small lunchbox and a fold-up coat. The padded divider between this and the main compartment is connected by velcro and can be removed if you want to personalise the bag further.  Either side of the zip has a magnet inside a reinforced section which has a metal ring on the bottom, allowing you to attach things to the side of the bag.

To the rear, there's a robust-looking carry handle at the top above two padded shoulder straps. There is a slim waist belt that can be stowed away. The main compartment is accessed through the back of the bag - There is a strong fabric loop allowing you to stow the shoulder straps or attach the bag to rolling luggage. There's also a small zipped pocket above this.

Undoing the rear flap gives access to the main compartment. On the back of this flap, there is a padded laptop compartment which can hold up to a 13-inch laptop or tablet. In the main compartment are soft-lined velcro dividers, which can be moved around as necessary to house your kit.

The bottom of the bag is lined with a tough waterproof fabric. To turn the bag into a shoulder bag, you just need to stow the shoulder straps on the rear and clip the included padded single strap to the two metal loops at either end of the bag. This is achieved by spring-loaded clasps. You can then adjust the length of the strap to suit.
