Press Release: Wacom Bamboo Fun

Wacom, the leading manufacturer of pen tablets, interactive pen displays and intuitive interface devices, today announces that Bamboo Fun – its consumer pen tablet ideal for creative work with a computer, has been awarded the internationally renowned red dot award for high design quality in the product design category by the Design Zentrum NRW. This is the second red dot award for the Bamboo range, as Bamboo - the first model in the series that is aimed at home and office users to enhance the experience of working with office applications - also received the same accolade in June 2007.

Designed by SIGNCE - a Munich-based strategic design consultancy, Bamboo Fun’s innovative design concept reflects a new way of working with a computer, simplifying the technology and providing an intuitive and natural tool for creativity that anyone can use. Created with ergonomics and ease-of-use in mind, Bamboo Fun is ideal for adding personal touches to photographs, drawings, collages and letters.

The Bamboo Fun tablet encloses a central rectangular active area within a softer shape, which encompasses a gentle, graduating slope on one side to make it more comfortable for the user’s hand to lean on while working. In contrast to the smooth external surface of the tablet, the active area itself has a matt finish, which provides a natural feeling of working with ‘digital’ paper.

With its curved corners and circular buttons, Bamboo Fun has an appealing and smooth form factor. Styled in contemporary white, which is balanced with blue pastel tones on the ergonomically designed pen and blue backlit icons, Bamboo Fun looks good in any office or room at home.

In addition to Bamboo Fun’s innovative Touch Ring for zooming and scrolling through software applications, the pen tablet’s design and ergonomics are further enhanced with the four programmable ExpressKeys, which can be assigned with everyday shortcuts such as cut and paste. Both of these features are incorporated seamlessly into the design of the tablet and provide an efficient way of working in creative applications.

Marco Burkandt, Creative Director and head of the design team at SIGNCE, says: “With Bamboo Fun, we focused entirely on communicating the user-centric ergonomics, the intuitive ease-of-use and the high quality of the technology. The interaction with the Touch Ring, the ExpressKeys and the paper-like surface of the pen input area make Bamboo Fun the ideal product for creative hobby artists.”

About the red dot design award
With over 3,203 entries from 51 countries, the red dot design award ranks among the largest design competitions worldwide. The competition is divided into three sections – product design, communication design and concept design – which are staged and adjudicated separately. The coveted trophy is the red dot, the international seal of quality for outstanding design.

The annual award ceremony takes place on 23rd June 2008 in the Essen Opera House, Aalto Theatre, Germany.
