I Want To Play Around With Film Cameras, They Look Fun

Leica SOFORT Instant Camera

Film Camera Positives

Film cameras have made a bit of a revival over the last few years with instant cameras really selling well on big stores such as Amazon. Originally created by Polaroid cameras, with Polaroid prints, the majority of Instant cameras are now "Instax Cameras" from Fujifilm, but there are others available, using Instax, Polaroid, and Zink papers.

As well as instant cameras, film cameras can be purchased for not much money at all on the second-hand camera market (our partner, CameraWorld*, has some excellent bargains) which won't give you instant prints but they're fun to use.

The main plus of buying a second-hand film camera is the price, under £100, and with instant cameras, you get your prints almost instantly which is great for those who aren't very patient. Instant cameras tend to be very easy to use, too.

Both forms of film cameras also make you slow down and really think about what you're photographing as you don't want to waste a precious print/negative which is a great thing in an age where we're always eager to rush.

Film Camera Negatives

The main negative is that film is expensive! Controls tend to be limited on instant cameras, too, and the results aren't always perfect which is meant to be the 'magic' of instant photography but not everyone will agree. Instant film cameras don't tend to be compact in size, either, and some just look weird!

As for film cameras, they can take some getting used to control wise and not 'seeing' what you've captured on a screen is both different and annoying at the same time!

Film Camera Price & Options

Film isn't the cheapest thing out there but film cameras are reasonably priced. However, you will pay a bit more money for an instant camera from brands such as Fujifilm.

Our Recommendation: Fuji Instax Mini 9

Fuji Instax Mini 9

The Instax Mini 9 is a compact instant camera with a cute and iconic design. It includes a selfie mirror and close-up lens as well as a high-key mode for brighter photos and an automatic exposure measurement for aperture settings. The Instax mini 9 is super easy to use, and compatible with Instax mini film for instant credit card-sized prints.
