Why You Should Embrace Criticism As A Photographer

Criticism isn't something we tend to like to hear. However, the right type of criticism can be very useful if you take the time to actually listen and not get defensive about it.

As a photographer, you've probably received your fair share of criticism and feedback from people who generally want to help you improve your photos. However, alongside the useful advice can come a barrage of unhelpful comments and an almost trolling style critique that's not really worth listening to at all. Even though these unhelpful comments can rub you up the wrong way, it's not worth being defensive with everyone who offers you advice as after all, they probably have lots of experience and advice that you really should take onboard.

"Not all criticism is created equal, and not all criticism has value," Art of Manliness.

One chap who has an interesting take on the topic is the founder of a popular Youtube channel called the Art of Manliness. We know the video isn't directed at photographers specifically, but the advice can be applied to our genre none the less.

"Criticism constitutes a threat to our egos and evokes a very visceral flight or fight response," Art of Manliness.

Basically, the channel advises you to ignore the haters, stay calm, really listen, change your perspective and to take ownership of your mistakes without becoming defensive and making excuses for it. The channel also says that it's really worth you asking clear, clarifying questions so arguments don't occur and don't forget to thank the person for their feedback. You could also show them how you've used their advice to improve the particular shot they were advising you on or in future examples of your work.
