You Gotta See This in iOS Apps

The You Gotta See This App claims to not be a panorama app, but one that creates special collages in a unique way which can then be shared with friends and family via Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. The app works by taking individual pictures as you move your camera around in 3D space and uses the gyroscope to correctly position the images on a flat surface.

You Gotta See This iPhone App Features

  • Seven different themes
  • Uses the gyroscope to position images
  • Save to camera roll, email or share on Twitter, Facebook and Flickr
  • Requires an iPhone 4, iPad 2 or an iPod touch (4th generation)

You Gotta See This iPhone App Performance

The app is simple to use, start it up and press the record button. There is a tutorial available within the app and on YouTube. If the border goes red you are moving the camera too quickly and need to slow down. There is a bar which runs across the top to indicate how much memory is left. You need to make sure you have covered your desired area before this runs out to ensure there are no unwanted gaps.

The next screen shows you a preview where you can slide left or right to choose your theme. When going from theme to theme the app does take a few seconds to create your preview and there is occasional crashing with no error message to indicate what the problem may have been. There are examples of the available themes below (light table collage has been used in the larger examples below).

Your finished collage can then be saved to your camera roll, shared by email or uploaded to your preferred social network site (Twitter, Facebook or Flickr). The makers warn "to get the highest possible resolution of the collages, save the collage to the camera roll and sync it to your computer as the photos app shows only a small preview of the original 4 megapixel image which is actually saved."

Below are a range of examples using the light table collage theme. The first three have all been taken in wide open areas and have given a decent result. The last picture was taken in a much more closed area and the resulting image hasn't been aligned particularly well. There are also random gaps in some of the examples as it is hard to figure out what area you have covered. A small preview while recording indicating where you have taken pictures would be useful to ensure you get a good coverage.

Other issues to note are that there is no image editing available and you can't select individual frames to delete, which would be ideal if you accidentally take a frame that has a distracting object in it. Lastly, you must remember to save your collage each time, if you forget and start taking another set of pictures you will lose your last creation.

You Gotta See This iPhone App Verdict

The app is really easy to use and gives a unique way to take pictures which you'll either love or hate. It's great to see that the app allows you to upload to Twitter, Facebook and Flickr but is let down by crashing when selecting your preferred theme. With a bit of practice you'll be able to create great collages if you are lucky enough to visit some stunning locations.
