Zeiss Batis Distagon 18mm f/2.8 T* Review - Verdict

Zeiss Batis 18mm F2,8 Front Element View

Value For Money

The Zeiss Batis Distagon 18mm f/2.8 T* lens is priced at £1199. 18mm lenses have always been somewhat rare for full-frame systems, so the only obvious direct alternative is the Samyang 18mm f/2.8 AF at the very low price of £349.

The question becomes a judgement call as to whether we invest in that Zeiss pedigree, at a price.

Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 T* Verdict

There is no doubt that Zeiss makes some very fine lenses. It is also a pleasure to have a range of AF lenses as well, and the Batis 18mm fits beautifully on the Sony E system cameras. 18mm lenses are not the easiest to use and do need working at. Apart from the potential for indoor architecture, the sweeping vistas of the landscape will usually only look good if the foreground is powerful as well. Otherwise, mountains may look very small in the background. So as a general rule, we need to get in and then get in closer. An example is the picture of the stag, which was shot from only about three feet away and yet the creature takes up just a small part of the frame.

Those who want a lens to match their existing Zeiss optics will of course not find it a difficult decision and they will be rewarded with a superb lens.
